Dynamic shoot'em up from the PlatinumGames studio. In Sol Cresta we take control of a space fighter and eliminate hordes of enemies. During the game we gain new stages of the ship, thanks to which our combat potential grows.
Sol Cresta is a shoot'em up developed by PlatinumGames studio, known for such games as Bayonetta, Vanquish or NieR: Automata. The game is the first installment of the Neo-Classic Arcade Series, and is inspired by Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta, which were popular games on arcade in the 1980s.
In Sol Cresta we take on the role of a fighter pilot. Viewing the action from a top-down perspective, during the game we fly up the screen and eliminate hordes of enemy units, among which we can find both "cannon fodder" in mass quantities, as well as powerful bosses. A characteristic feature of the described title is the "docking" mechanic, presented for the first time in Moon Cresta. It consists in docking our fighter in its successive iterations, which appear in certain moments. In this way, we acquire new weapons and increase our combat potential. On the other hand, the fighter gets bigger and bigger with time, which makes it an easier target for adversaries.
Sol Cresta features pixel art graphics and a catchy, chiptune soundtrack.
Sol Cresta was first announced on 1 April 2020. Although at the time it turned out to be just an April Fools' joke, exactly one year later PlatinumGames presented it to the world again, but this time the announcement turned out to be true.

Platinum's modernisation of the classic shoot 'em up form has delivered something thrilling, distinct ? and in need of a bit of a polish
Nintendo Life: 7 / 10 by Tom Massey
If you're a fan of this now very old series, you might find Sol Cresta's mould appealing. It's certainly fun to improve, win shields, and prolong your survival by grabbing back lost ships; and to be able to whip your craft into formation and quickly destroy bosses with a countdown of powerful ordnance - and the audio is sublime. At the same time, with all of its interesting ideas, one can't help but feel that there are elements here that need more polish and careful implementation. There are very few memorable boss attacks, and while some stage junctures are somewhat shrewd, others come off as ill-conceived or uninspired. By no means is that to say it's unenjoyable - there is a definite groove within its visual mess that becomes clearer over time as you chip away at the interesting core gameplay - but the fact of the matter is that Sol Cresta is up against a wealth of extremely steep competition, and to stand out it needs to be hitting the all-important notes with greater finesse.
