Steredenn is an old-school side-scroll and purely arcade 2D shooter for PC, PS4 and etc. set in space. The title, being a homage to the classics of the genre, was developed by Pixelnest, a French independent studio.
Steredenn, which is practically devoid of plot layer, focuses entirely on wild and unlimited “shmup” (shoot ‘em up) kind of gameplay. While playing, we sit at the helm of a well-armed spaceship and our task is to eliminate subsequent hordes of space pirates in a constant fight for survival. A myriad of diverse enemies that shoot a veritable barrage of projectiles will stand in our way, although the game isn’t devoid of more tactical boss fights in which we have to devise a proper strategy. Luckily, we can make use of quite a wide arsenal of 35 weapons and 25 enhancements for our ship that we unlock along with progress. Undoubtedly, one of the game’s strengths is the fact that levels are generated procedurally which ensures unique enemy setup and a fresh dose of excitement with every single playthrough.
Steredenn for PC, PS4 and etc. offers several different gameplay variants, although the classical cooperation mode is exclusive to consoles. Apart from the standard mode, we can take part in the so-called daily challenges and compare our scores with those of our friends with the use of online leaderboards. The game also features a special Arena mode that lets us fight a 1vs1 duel against a boss that we previously unlocked. This way, we can devise and perfect our battle strategies.
Graphics-wise, Steredenn presents similar to such immortal classics as R-Type or Turrican, just as the genesis and the sources of inspiration of the developers suggest. The game has and old-school and pixelated style, accompanied by intensive electro-metal soundtrack.
