Soviet Strike is the next installment of a series of aerial arcade shooters, which began with Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf, published in 1992. The production tells the story of a secret American military unit, which operates in Eastern Europe and tries to prevent a group of madmen from seizing power in the region.

Story

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a struggle for influence begins in Eastern Europe. The former head of the KGB, Uri Vatsiznov, also known as Shadowman, plans to overthrow Russia's current government. To this end, he joins forces with the leader of a Caucasus-based organisation, Sadissa Savak, and the scientist Dr. Grimyenko, who owns long-range missiles. To prevent the war, the secret STRIKE military unit undertakes a series of missions to undermine the plans of the former secret service leader and his companions.

Mechanics

Soviet Strike is, like the previous installments of the series, an arcade isometric aerial shooter. Players sit at the helm of a combat helicopter and perform missions consisting of destroying targets, rescuing spies and civilians or stealing specific items. Dozens of enemies are trying to stop them, from soldiers, through tanks and rocket launchers, to large ships and other helicopters.

The gamefocuses on dynamic firefights and spectacular skirmishes of the helicopter with numerous enemy forces. Nevertheless, the title also requires strategic planning. Players must properly manage their inventory of rockets, fuel and armor and collect their supplies on maps. Enemies react dynamically to the player's actions: using radars, they can determine the position of the hero and, for example, strengthen the defense of targets they can be heading to in the next few minutes on the battlefield.

Technical aspects

Soviet Strike is the first installment of the series to be released on PS1. Thus, it offers much improved audiovisuals compared to its predecessors, with spectacular explosions and detailed maps. The game belongs to the genre of political fiction, neatly mixing real characters, organizations and countries with fictional people and events.
