Star Trucker is a simulator of a space truck driver. It was developed by Monster and Monster.

Mechanics

The game is an unusual arcade simulator, tasking us with transporting goods across space. It's rather humorous and light-hearted - our spaceship looks like a truck with jet engines instead of wheels.

Players travel through galactic highways, completing various assignments. Earned funds can be spent on upgrading the truck and buying new trailers, which unlock increasingly lucrative jobs.

We can also leave our track and go on a walk through outer space to collect scrap or make repairs. Apart from main quests we can also smuggle contraband and trade trinkets gathered during our trips.

The game's world feels alive, making it much more appealing. Players will encounter many different spaceships, including other trucks. There's also no shortage of various dangers and events. The truck is equipped with a radio used to talk to other characters.

Game8: 66 / 100 by Aaron Bacabac

Star Trucker is a solid example of a promising concept that’s been executed… well enough. As a simulation game, it doesn’t exactly grip you, and the experience is bogged down by the tedious upkeep of fuel and power cells, coupled with clunky controls that can’t even be remapped. Despite these flaws, the simulation of the universe you're trucking in is genuinely impressive. With some fine-tuning, this game could evolve into a stellar experience. For now, though, it’s best you keep yourself grounded with a more down-to-earth trucking experience.

Saving Content: 4 / 5 by Scott Ellison II

Star Trucker competes with the likes of American Truck Simulator and is able to keep up without needing to catch its breath. Monster and Monster’s truck simulation is a game I thought would be a novelty, but it turned out to be so much more. There’s nothing like cruising through a system to deliver cargo while you’re leaking oxygen and you’re about to exceed the deadline given to you – do you risk it for the extra money? This and many other questions is what you’ll be asking yourself. Star Trucker is as challenging as it is rewarding, and it’s out of this world truck simulation not to be missed.

Digital Chumps: 7.8 / 10 by Nathaniel Stevens

Star Trucker from developer Monster & Monster and publisher Raw Fury is a solid game and a fun concept. It does enough to keep you in a space truck’s cockpit with its skills tree, challenging hauls, and push to keep exploring space and its vastness. It certainly has some fixable shortcomings but has more positive than negative.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Sound: Many players praised the game's graphics and sound design, noting that it looks good and has a great soundtrack, including licensed radio stations that enhance the atmosphere.
  • Unique Concept: The idea of combining trucking mechanics with a space setting was well-received, offering a fresh take on the simulation genre.
  • Engaging Gameplay Loop: Some players found the resource management aspect engaging, enjoying the challenge of maintaining their truck and managing supplies.
  • Relaxing Experience: Several reviews highlighted the game as a chill experience, allowing players to enjoy a leisurely pace while delivering cargo and exploring space.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many users noted that the game quickly becomes repetitive, with a monotonous loop of picking up cargo, delivering it, and upgrading the truck.
  • Lack of Depth in Mechanics: There were complaints about the limited customization options for the truck, as players can only upgrade existing parts rather than swap them out for better ones.
  • Control Issues: A significant number of players found the controls frustrating, especially the lack of lateral thrust, which made maneuvering in 3D space difficult.
  • Economic Balance Problems: The in-game economy was criticized for being unbalanced, with players struggling to earn enough money to cover maintenance costs, leading to a frustrating experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Inventory Management: Users expressed a desire for a personal inventory system that would allow them to carry more than one item at a time during space walks.
  • Battery Recharge Options: Many players were disappointed by the inability to recharge batteries, leading to constant purchases that hindered progression.
  • Longer Hauls and Open World: Players wished for longer routes and more exploration opportunities, as the game often feels confined to short trips between warp gates.
  • Improved AI and NPC Interactions: There were calls for better AI behavior and more engaging interactions with NPCs, as the current implementation felt lifeless and uninteresting.
  • Multiplayer Options: Some users suggested adding multiplayer features to enhance the gameplay experience and foster community interaction.

Summary

  • Overall, Star Trucker has a solid foundation with a unique concept and engaging atmosphere, but it suffers from repetitive gameplay, control issues, and a lack of depth that could be improved with future updates.
