The Sentient

Starmancer is a real-time strategy inspired by Dwarf Fortress. In the game, the player takes on the role of an artificial intelligence managing a space colony. The game was developed by Ominux Games studio and published by Chucklefish.

Plot

In the reality described in Starmancer, the Earth was completely destroyed. Just before this event, humanity had set up a project to transfer consciousness to memory banks supervised by artificial intelligence - Starmancer. The player takes on the role of the AI, and is tasked with creating a viable facility and breed bodies for the colonists.

Mechanics

Starmancer is a real-time strategy that aims to reach the level of complexity featured in Dwarf Fortress. The player - as an artificial intelligence - must control many aspects of the functioning of the settlement at the same time. These include oxygen levels, electricity supplies, and the supply of water and food to colonists. For this purpose, a number of different, fully modifiable rooms have been constructed.

A very important element of the game is to maintain an appropriate level of residents' satisfaction. If they don't like the player's rule, they will try to overthrow him or her - successful coup will mean the end of the game. Apart from the needs of the colonists themselves, the system of relations between them should also be taken into account. If an accident occurs, it will have a negative impact not only on the victim, but also on those close to them.

All the fun is not limited to the colony. The player can explore a procedurally generated world that is filled with different activities. One can complete missions, react to rescue beacon signals, and interact with the encountered factions. Thanks to this, new technologies are being acquired, which will be used to expand the colony.

Not all encountered factions are friendly and the colony may be attacked. Therefore, the player has to set up turrets and train the inhabitants to defend themselves.

Technical aspects

Starmancer delivers pixelart visuals. The creators took care of the variety of characters - there are more than 8000 different models available. In addition, all rooms are fully modifiable in terms of aesthetics.
