A coop first-person survival horror from the creators of Strayed Lights. In Storebound, we end up locked inside a procedurally generated shopping mall overrun by monsters. We must cooperate with other people, hoping to reach the exit and avoid being captured by the creatures known as employees.
Attempting to spend the night in a shopping mall after it closes can have serious legal consequences. This is not the only risk, as in some cases, such an endeavor can end tragically. Especially if, after dark, the corridors of such a place begin to be haunted by creatures known as employees, who go on the hunt when the lights go out.
We can experience this by playing the cooperative survival horror game titled Storebound. It was developed by the independent French studio Embers, which also created the game Strayed Lights. The creators were inspired by creepypastas (thrilling stories spread via the Internet) such as The Backrooms and SCP-3008.
In Storebound the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP).
We take control of characters trying to find a way to escape from a large shopping mall. The layout of the mall is procedurally generated each time we start the game, so each journey looks slightly different from the previous one. During the day, our task is to explore the building in search of valuable items and resources that increase our chances of survival. At night, however, we become "prey" for the monsters hunting us – the employees.
Given that the monsters have an advantage over us in terms of strength and size, the key to success is maintaining silence, sneaking behind enemies, using ventilation shafts, as well as closely cooperating with other players to overcome terrain obstacles or solve environmental puzzles.
Cooperation is hindered by the fact that the in-game voice chat takes into account the distance between the participants. Although we have walkie-talkies at our disposal, using them carries the risk of being overheard by our pursuers.
The same goes for flashlights, which illuminate the darkness for us but also make us visible to enemies. On the other hand, staying in the dark gradually drives us to madness, which can ultimately turn us against our allies.
As we progress, we gain experience, gradually unlocking new abilities and passive traits.
Storebound is designed for online coop for up to three people.
The graphics of Storebound are styled in a retro aesthetic, reminiscent of VHS tape recordings (with characteristic image grain and chromatic aberration effect). The character models resemble caricatured figures made of clay.
