In July 2025, the team at FireFly Studios released a remastered version of their iconic real-time strategy game (RTS), titled Stronghold: Crusader - Definitive Edition. Subsequently, they focused on its development, and a part of this process is the expansion described here - Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition - The Canary & The Trader. It serves as the first major add-on for this production.

New features in the expansion

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition - The Canary & The Trader introduces two new rulers for us to deal with. The Canary is the sister of the Rat (well-known to fans of the series), who prefers setting traps for her enemies and building complex fortifications rather than engaging in open combat. The Trader, on the other hand, focuses on a strong economy, although he is not unfamiliar with warfare.

  • Improved AI Mechanics: There is a call for better AI interaction with game systems and more sophisticated strategies, such as the Trader using his wealth to support allies rather than just building a large army.
  • Historical Depth: Some users suggest that the new lords could benefit from deeper historical context or unique traits that align more closely with the game's setting.
  • More Variety in Gameplay: Players hope for future updates and DLCs to introduce new maps, missions, and more engaging economic and military campaigns, rather than merely adding similar characters.

Summary

  • Overall, while the DLC is seen as a fair addition to the game at its price point, there are significant concerns regarding the quality and challenge of the new content. Players are eager for more meaningful updates in the future.
