PC Invasion: 9 / 10 by Martynas Klimas

Tails of Iron could go deeper on the story and lighter on the backtracking, but if it ever gets a sequel I hope it maintains obvious love seen in the art direction and design.

God is a Geek: 9 / 10 by Chris White

Tails of Iron is a charming and often brutal Souls-like adventure, with some wonderful combat mechanics and a gorgeous hand-drawn world.

Full Review

Screen Rant: 4.5 / 5 by Mason Teague

Tails of Iron is an expertly crafted effort from Odd Bug Studio. The visual style alone is worth the price of admission, but the additional tough-but-fair combat, RPG-lite components and engaging exploration makes for a worthy entry into the Souls-like subgenre.

  • Repetitive Gameplay: A significant number of reviews mention the repetitiveness of side quests and backtracking, which can detract from the overall experience.
  • Difficulty Issues: Many players express frustration with the difficulty spikes, particularly in the "Bloody Whiskers" mode, which is seen as unfair due to poorly designed hitboxes and attack telegraphs.
  • Backtracking: Users frequently mention the need to retrace steps for quests, which can become tedious and disrupt the flow of gameplay.
  • Combat Frustrations: Some players find the combat clunky, with issues related to hit detection and the lack of invincibility frames during dodges.

  • Fast Travel Options: Players desire more fast travel points to reduce backtracking, especially after completing quests or defeating bosses.
  • Difficulty Settings: Some reviews suggest that the game should provide more flexibility in difficulty settings, allowing players to switch modes mid-game.

  • Improved Combat Mechanics: Suggestions include better hitbox accuracy and the introduction of more fluid combat mechanics, such as enhanced dodging systems.

Summary

  • Overall, *Tails of Iron* is recognized for its beautiful visuals and engaging narrative, but it faces criticism for its gameplay mechanics and repetitive elements that could benefit from refinement in future installments.
