The golden era of dungeon crawlers came in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, over the following decades a number of newer, yet classically realized positions of this type were created. Among their creators one can also find the independent Italian studio Baronyx Games and their game The Fortress.
In The Fortress we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the gameplay we play as a convict imprisoned in the titular fortress, who tries to reach and defeat the Sorcerer King residing in the highest tower in order to escape from that place.
To do so, he traverses room after room and faces the challenges lurking in front of him. The adventure takes him through catacombs and underground forges, among other places. When the protagonist dies, his place is taken by another prisoner, who must face the consequences of the actions of his predecessor.
The main danger that awaits us are the enemies. Both hostile humans and aggressive creatures stand in our way. Clashes with them take place in turn-based mode.
During them we roll three colored dice associated with strength, mana and agility, and then choose one of them and indicate the target we want to attack. Opponents are susceptible to certain types of damage, which makes success assured not only by the right "build" of the character, but also by a bit of luck. Dice unused in a given turn feed the indicator of our hidden power, the filling of which allows us to use a powerful attack.
The range of available combat capabilities is determined by the class of the convict. We can eliminate enemies both in close quarters, using white weapons, and at a distance, using a bow, as well as using spells. We are saved from death by potions, the supply of which is especially useful during duels with bosses.
Not all residents of the fortress are hostile to us. Along the way we meet fallen abbots or even vampire traders, with whom we can make alliances and use their help, in return fulfilling their demands.
The graphic design of The Fortress is kept in a retro style full of pixels, whose poor colors and characteristic "grain" refer to the classic representatives of the genre.
