The golden era of dungeon crawlers came in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, over the following decades a number of newer, yet classically realized positions of this type were created. Among their creators one can also find the independent Italian studio Baronyx Games and their game The Fortress.

Gameplay

In The Fortress we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the gameplay we play as a convict imprisoned in the titular fortress, who tries to reach and defeat the Sorcerer King residing in the highest tower in order to escape from that place.

To do so, he traverses room after room and faces the challenges lurking in front of him. The adventure takes him through catacombs and underground forges, among other places. When the protagonist dies, his place is taken by another prisoner, who must face the consequences of the actions of his predecessor.
