The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is an action RPG game developed by Neocore Games Studio. The studio is best known for King Arthur series, which includes two full games and several add-ons. Neocore Games has also developed Crusaders: Thy Kingdom Come.

Player takes on professor Van Helsing’s son, who – like his father – hunts and kills all kinds of monsters. The adventure begins with a letter requesting assistance, sent from Borgovii, a land located on the eastern fringe of Europe. Many years ago, the professor had helped liberate that region from the rule of a vampire coterie. Back then, he was allied with brilliant scientists, Fulmigati being one of them – a true Renaissance man and a great talent. At this point the brave monster hunter is already advanced in years, so he sends his son to Borgovii along with Katarina, a noblewoman of those sites, whose is ghost is bound by and oath to serve Van Helsing family.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmospheric Setting: The gothic-noir world of Borgovia is richly detailed, blending 19th-century European folklore with dark humor and steampunk elements.
  • Engaging Combat: Fast-paced and fluid combat that allows for a mix of melee and ranged attacks, with a customizable skill tree that supports various builds.
  • Companion System: Lady Katarina, the ghostly companion, adds depth with her witty banter, utility during combat, and the ability to manage inventory.
  • Replayability: The game offers a fair amount of content, including different classes (if DLCs are purchased), scenarios, and achievements that encourage multiple playthroughs.
  • Humor and Writing: The game features sharp, self-aware writing that pokes fun at RPG tropes, enhancing the overall experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Limited Class Options: The base game restricts players to only one class (the Bounty Hunter) unless they purchase additional DLCs, which many players find unacceptable for an RPG.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Combat can become tedious, especially with swarming enemies that require kiting strategies, leading to a sense of monotony.
  • Technical Issues: Users report various bugs, crashes, and performance problems, particularly with optimization on certain hardware.
  • Short Campaign: The main storyline is considered short, with many players feeling that the latter chapters lack the creativity and engagement of the first.
  • Difficulty Balancing: Some players find the difficulty spikes frustrating, with enemies having excessive health and the inability to change difficulty mid-playthrough.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Manual Save Option: Players express frustration over the lack of manual save options, relying solely on automatic saves which can lead to lost progress.
  • More Diverse Enemy Variety: After a certain point, players feel that the enemy types become repetitive, lacking the variety expected in an ARPG.
  • Improved Loot System: Many reviews mention a lack of interesting loot and a need for a loot filter to manage inventory better.
  • Expanded Storytelling: While the initial story is engaging, players desire a more substantial narrative and better side quests to enhance the overall experience.
  • Better Optimization and Support: Users highlight the need for improved optimization for various hardware setups, particularly for AMD graphics cards and newer operating systems.

Summary

  • In summary, while The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing has its strengths, particularly in atmosphere and combat, it suffers from significant limitations in class variety, technical issues, and gameplay repetitiveness that detract from the overall experience.
