The Legend of Heroes is a series of jRPG games, developed since 1989. Over the years it has lived to see a number of sub-cycles, which include Trails Through Daybreak. The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon described here is a continuation of the second installment of the latter, and the Japanese studio Nihon Falcom is behind its development.

Gameplay

As in the previous game under this banner, in The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon the action is viewed from behind the protagonists' backs (TPP). The adventure takes us through the republic of Calvard on the continent of Zemuria. We get to know the plot from the perspective of three characters, learning the intertwining stories prepared for each of them.

While Trails Beyond the Horizon excels especially in its combat and RPG systems, it also succeeds with its main story and side content, such as the Grim Garten, character relationship system, and side quests that all tell unique stories worth listening to. Trails Beyond the Horizon is a game that deserves recognition and is up there with some of the best the genre has to offer.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon doesn’t try to hide what it is. Fans should be the ones to play this game. They know Zemuria’s story from generation to generation and across countries. Its best features are the world it creates, the way characters grow, and the depth of its combat. Its flaws are oversized systems, sluggish progress, and a hostile attitude toward newbies.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon is another confident entry in a series. It offers a deep, flexible battle system, a massive amount of content, and a story that rewards long-time fans with meaningful payoffs and familiar faces. It’s not the best place to start your Trails journey, and newcomers may feel lost despite the helpful recaps. Consider jumping on Trails in the Sky also available on Switch 2 first. For existing fans, or players who already know they enjoy this style of RPG, there’s a lot to appreciate here. Personally, I’m far from a complete Trails expert, but every entry I’ve played has won me over through its combat systems and world-building. The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon continues that trend. It may not surprise you, but it delivers exactly what it promises.

  • Visual Presentation: Many reviews commend the game's graphics and animations, marking it as one of the best-looking entries in the Trails series.

The main cons of the game

  • Slow Pacing: Several reviews mention that the game starts slowly, particularly in the first act, with a lot of dialogue and world-building that can feel drawn out.
  • Story and Gameplay Imbalance: Some players feel that certain routes, especially Van's, are bloated with filler content, detracting from the overall pacing and engagement of the main narrative.
  • Difficulty Balancing: There are complaints about unbalanced battles, where some enemies feel excessively spongy while others are too easy, leading to frustration in combat.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Engaging Side Content: Players desire more meaningful side quests and interactions, as some feel that the optional content doesn't add much to the overall experience.
  • Expanded Voice Acting: There are calls for more scenes to be fully voiced, as some dialogue remains unvoiced, which can break immersion.
  • Better Difficulty Options: Some players wish for more challenging gameplay options, especially for new game plus modes, to enhance replayability.
  • Improved Dungeon Mechanics: The "Grim Garten" dungeon system, while improved, is still criticized for being repetitive and not as engaging as past iterations of similar systems.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, "The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon" is generally well-received, particularly among long-time fans of the series, but it does have notable pacing issues and some gameplay balance concerns. The game is recommended for those familiar with the previous titles but is not considered a suitable entry point for newcomers.
