The main pros of the game

  • Character Depth and Nostalgia: The game excels in character development and nostalgia, offering a reunion of beloved characters from previous entries in the series. Many players expressed joy at the depth and interactions among characters, particularly in the context of their established histories.
  • Engaging Storytelling: While the plot may not be the primary focus for everyone, many players appreciated how the game wraps up various story arcs, particularly the Crossbell and Erebonia arcs, providing emotional closure.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The combat system, including the new "United Front" mechanic and the "True Reverie Corridor," received praise for its depth and strategic options. Players enjoyed the ability to experiment with a large roster of characters and build unique team compositions.
  • Visual and Audio Quality: The game features high-quality music and improved visuals, with well-executed motion-capture cutscenes that enhance the storytelling experience.
  • Replayability: The inclusion of mini-games and side content, particularly in the Reverie Corridor, adds variety and encourages exploration beyond the main story.

The main cons of the game

  • Overwhelming Character Roster: Some players felt that the vast number of playable characters (over 50) led to a diluted focus on individual character development, making it challenging to connect with many characters.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: While the combat mechanics are praised, some players noted that the gameplay could become repetitive, especially in the post-game content, with a grind-heavy experience to level up all characters.
  • Story Structure Issues: The narrative's reliance on multiple routes and character switches was criticized by some players, who felt it disrupted immersion and pacing. Additionally, certain storylines, particularly Lloyd's, were deemed less engaging compared to others.
  • Localization Concerns: There were complaints about the localization choices, with some players feeling that the English version did not capture the original intent of the Japanese script, leading to a loss of nuance in character interactions and dialogue.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Character Development for New Characters: Some players expressed a desire for more substantial development for new characters introduced in this entry, feeling that they did not receive enough focus compared to returning characters.
  • Romantic Elements: Several reviews pointed out the absence of bonding events or deeper romantic interactions, especially for established characters, which some fans had come to expect from previous games in the series.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: While some players appreciated existing quality of life features, others wanted better systems for managing large character rosters, such as saving quartz loadouts, to streamline gameplay and reduce repetitive tasks.

Conclusion

  • "The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie" is largely seen as a triumphant conclusion to multiple story arcs within the series, celebrated for its character depth, engaging combat, and nostalgic connections. However, it also faces criticism for its overwhelming character roster, repetitive gameplay, and some narrative structure issues. The game is highly recommended for fans of the series, but new players are cautioned against starting with this entry due to its reliance on prior knowledge of the extensive lore.
