Like a Dragon / Yakuza Game Series

Yakuza (Japanese. Ryu ga Gotoku - Like a Dragon) is a series that began as TPP action adventure games, while in 2020 began a love affair with the jRPG genre. The essence of gameplay in productions under this banner are spectacular clashes, in which we mostly use our own fists, white weapons such as clubs or samurai swords, as well as elements of the environment, such as trash cans or bicycles. Firearms are present, but usually do not play a major role. The protagonists have numerous fighting styles, which we can upgrade. Of great importance are impressive finishers, in which opponents are eliminated in a particularly impressive way.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is full of content for anyone willing to sink into the beautiful island of Hawaii. While its main story may take a while to boil, and never feels quite as good as the side stories, Ichiban's adventures always entertain and delight.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Gameplay: Many users praised the combat system, noting it is more dynamic and fluid compared to its predecessor. The addition of character placement and improved job systems adds depth to the turn-based combat.
  • Rich Side Content: The game is filled with an extensive variety of side quests, mini-games, and activities that keep players engaged. Users highlighted the sheer volume of content, including fun mini-games and hidden collectibles.
  • Character Development: The game features well-developed characters, with a mix of humor and emotional depth that resonates with players. The interactions between characters, especially between Kiryu and Ichiban, were particularly appreciated.
  • Visuals and Presentation: The graphics and overall presentation received positive feedback, with many noting improvements in textures and animations compared to previous titles.
  • Nostalgia Factor: For long-time fans of the series, the inclusion of familiar characters and references to past games was a significant draw.

The main cons of the game

  • Story Weaknesses: Many users felt the main storyline was weaker than in previous installments. Some described it as "mid" or lacking coherence, with pacing issues and underwhelming character arcs.
  • Technical Issues: A recurring complaint was the game's frequent crashes, which could lead to frustrating losses of progress, especially during lengthy cutscenes or dungeon runs.
  • DLC Concerns: The decision to lock the New Game Plus (NG+) mode behind a DLC paywall was criticized, with users feeling that essential content should not be sold separately.
  • Grindy Gameplay: Some players found aspects of the game, particularly the side content like Dondoko Island, to be grindy and tedious, detracting from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Save Systems: Users expressed a desire for more frequent auto-saves, especially given the game's tendency to crash.
  • Balanced Difficulty: Some players noted that certain side quests and dungeons had unpredictable difficulty spikes, leading to frustration.
  • Streamlined Storytelling: There were calls for a more concise narrative experience, with fewer lengthy cutscenes and dialogues that could disrupt gameplay flow.
  • Better Integration of New Mechanics: Some users felt that while new mechanics were introduced, they were not utilized effectively in the overall gameplay experience.

Summary

  • Overall, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is seen as a worthy follow-up to its predecessor, with notable improvements in gameplay and character interactions, but it is hampered by technical issues and a less compelling story.
