The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories is a platformer enriched with adventure elements. This is a project of the Japanese studio White Owls. During the production, the team was headed by Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro, with titles such as Deadly Premonition or D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die.
The action takes place in modern times. We play the role of a woman known as J.J. Macfield, who goes to a mysterious island in search of a lost friend. She quickly discovers that this place is ruled by supernatural laws that prevent the heroine from dying there, no matter what injuries her body may suffer.
Swery has established itself as a game developer with a specific climate and The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories remains faithful to this style, combining humour with macabre.
The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories is a 2.5D platform, which means that the graphics were made in full 3D, but the gameplay will take place in two dimensions. The player travels the world, avoiding traps, overcoming obstacles and dealing with enemies. While playing, the game tests both dexterity and cleverness with regular puzzles.
The maps have been densely filled with various threats. The protagonist dies often and in a spectacular way, e.g. driven over by a rushing train, devastated by a huge windmill, crushed by a giant monkey or cut into pieces by circular saws. All this is shown with a pinch of salt, and each death is a lesson that allows you to get further on the next approach.
