The Mortuary Assistant is a horror adventure game with sim elements. It was developed by DarkStone Digital studio. Most of the project was developed by Brian Clarke himself, who was previously employed by such companies as Trion Worlds, Electronic Arts and Disney Interactive.

Plot

The player takes on the role of an employee at River Fields Funeral Home. One night he receives an urgent call to work to embalm several corpses. After arriving at the place and starting the order, it quickly turns out that these bodies are different from all the previous ones, and demonic forces are involved in the matter of their deaths. To make matters worse, these beings are not done with them yet. What they don't know, however, is that our protagonist is also no ordinary embalmer, and has the knowledge and skills that give him a chance to win the battle against the supernatural beasts.

Game mechanics

In The Mortuary Assistant we observe events from a first-person perspective. The game reproduces in a quite realistic way the activities used to prepare bodies for funerals, and all of them have to be performed manually, like in simulators.

At the same time, the player must also perform occult rituals that stop demons from killing the protagonist. Along the way, he also collects plot clues and solves logic puzzles. Simple arcade sequences also appear from time to time, mainly revolving around hiding by and escaping from unclean forces.

The game is largely non-linear. It is designed so that each playthrough of the campaign contains unique challenges and provides new story threads. Demonic attacks and bodies given to us for embalming also change.
