The Unholy Society is an action-adventure game inspired by the 1980s and 1990s cinema, as well as comic book series like Preacher and Hellblazer (whose main character was John Constantine). The production was developed by independent studio Cat-astrophe Games.
The main hero of The Unholy Society is Bonaventura Horowitz, an exorcist addicted to cigarettes, who also does not despise a glass of whiskey. At the order of the Pope, the protagonist sets off to fight the forces of evil trying to bring eternal darkness to the world. The task is not an easy one, because such personalities as The Werewolf King, the Great Old One, Dracula, the Great Voodoo Shaman and Satan himself stand in the way. Although all this sounds very serious, the story told in the game is full of sarcasm and black humour
Most of the time spent in The Unholy Society the action is side-scrolled. Looking for more servants of the evil, the protagonist traverses various locations and talks to neutral characters and solves simple puzzles. Once he manages to reach the evil spawn, an exorcism begins, which we observe from the first person perspective (FPP). It takes the form of a duel, during which we aim at the enemy with a crucifix and attack (the list of attacks is displayed on a smartphone held by Bonaventure), while avoiding hostile blows. As in the fighting games, the duels are limited in time, and the fight is won by the participant who manages to knock out the enemy, or the one who has more life points at the end of the fight.
Two-dimensional graphics of The Unholy Society was made in cel-shading technique. In addtion, the game is similar to a comic book with characteristic speech balloons, which display dialogues or options related to interaction with the presented world.
