In 2024, the Whoopee Camp studio released Tomba! Special Edition, a refreshed version of the game Tomba! originally launched in 1997. Building on this momentum, the team also prepared a remaster of the second installment in the series. We are once again dealing with a 3D platformer with adventure elements and it's titled Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return Special Edition.

Gameplay

In Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return Special Edition, events are viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP), with the camera most often positioned above the character's head.

The gameplay is based on the formula developed for the first part of the series. This means we go through various locations, jump on platforms, avoid traps and terrain obstacles, solve puzzles, complete quests, and deal with enemies.

Combat system and abilities

We get rid of enemies by using melee weapons (such as flails, boomerangs, and hammers) and the protagonist's teeth, which can be sunk into the backs of adversaries. Additionally, the titular hero uses magical powers provided by special suits and robes taken from defeated bosses. Thanks to these, we can perform actions such as gliding (in a flying squirrel suit) or communicating with friendly pigs (in a piglet disguise).

Quests, puzzles, items

Various objectives await completion and are assigned to us by characters encountered along the way. The puzzles involve interacting with elements of the environment and searching for items to use in specific ways. While fighting and exploring locations, attention must be paid to the protagonist's health indicator. We can regain depleted strength, for example, by eating fruits.

Use a Potion: 7 / 10

Ultimately, Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return Special Edition is a product of its time – it’s full of heart, weirdness, and ambition, but it also looks and feels a little dated in design. It doesn’t hold your hand and it controls a bit like a bar of soap, but the core loop of exploring this colourful, silly world remains satisfying. And whilst it is a little limited on extras, this port provides an accessible way to play a cult classic on modern hardware – and thanks to the recent patch, it’s in a state worth recommending to those with a soft spot for the PlayStation era.

Video Chums: 7.8 / 10 by A.J. Maciejewski

I had so much fun with Tomba! 2 Special Edition and it reminded me just how special of a game it is thanks to its unorthodox approach to platforming, general goofiness, and stage designs that often offer much more than initially meets the eye. Plus, there are piggies. ??

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgia Factor: Many players expressed a deep emotional connection to the game, highlighting its importance during their childhood. The chance to relive those memories was a significant draw.
  • Gameplay Features: The addition of a rewind feature made challenging parts of the game less stressful, and players appreciated the unlocking of Tomba 1 quests by default.
  • Responsive Developers: The developers were praised for quickly addressing community concerns, such as adding the US soundtrack and implementing a 'Continue' option after game overs.
  • Visual and Audio Experience: Players enjoyed the charming visuals and the overall whimsical vibe of the game, which retained the essence of the original PS1 version.

The main cons of the game

  • Soundtrack Issues: Initially, the game was criticized for launching with only the Japanese soundtrack available during gameplay, which disappointed many fans who had nostalgic connections to the US/EU soundtrack.
  • Save Mechanics: The removal of the traditional save/load menu and the reliance on a rewind feature were seen as drawbacks. If players died, they had to revert to their last manual save, which could lead to significant progress loss.
  • Performance Issues: Some users reported performance dips and glitches, including audio issues and stuttering, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Limited Save Slots: Players noted that the game only allowed for three save slots, a significant reduction from the original's options.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • In-Game Soundtrack Switching: Although the US soundtrack was added post-launch, users wanted the ability to switch soundtracks in-game rather than having to start a new game.
  • Quality of Life Features: The absence of options for adjusting text speed, separate volume controls for music and sound effects, and a more comprehensive pause menu were highlighted as significant omissions.
  • Graphical Enhancements: Some players felt that the game could have benefitted from better graphical updates or options to enhance the visual experience beyond basic emulation.
  • Achievement Issues: There were complaints about a missable achievement, even when players believed they had completed 100% of the game.

Summary

  • Overall, while the game successfully brought back a beloved classic with some updated features and nostalgia, it faced criticism for its initial execution and certain missing functionalities that could enhance the player's experience.
