Trine 3 for PC is a platformer with elements derived from puzzle games. Frozenbyte, Finnish company which created the previous two installments of the game, has also developed this production.

The game takes us to a fairytale-like fantasy world. The campaign tells the story of the three characters known from the previous two parts of the series: wizard Amadeus, thief Zoya and knight Pontius. Each one of them has a different set of characteristics and skills, and in the course of our adventures we have to switch regularly between the characters. The knight is the slowest, but also the strongest, which makes him perfect for close combat. The wizard is able to materialize objects and move them with the power of his mind, but he is also the least resistant to damage. The thief is the most agile, and has a bow used both for ranged attacks and for launching a grappling hook.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Art Style: The game is praised for its stunning graphics and enchanting fairy-tale atmosphere, with vibrant landscapes and detailed environments.
  • Soundtrack: The music is described as beautiful and fitting the magical theme of the game.
  • Character Mechanics: Some players appreciated the introduction of new mechanics, such as characters having all their abilities from the start, which allowed for immediate engagement without grinding.
  • Puzzle Design: While some puzzles are criticized for being easy, others found the physics-based puzzles engaging and enjoyed the creative use of character abilities.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many users noted that the game is very short, often completing it in just a few hours (around 5-6 hours), which is significantly less than its predecessors.
  • Unfinished Story: The game ends abruptly, leaving many plot threads unresolved, which frustrated players who were expecting a complete narrative.
  • 3D Navigation Issues: The transition to 3D was met with criticism, as players found the camera angles awkward, making it difficult to judge distances and navigate platforms.
  • Simplified Gameplay: The removal of character progression, skill trees, and the introduction of very easy puzzles led to a perception of the game being less challenging and engaging than previous entries.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Gameplay: Players missed the complexity of puzzles and character abilities found in Trine 1 and 2. The lack of upgrades and skill trees was a common point of disappointment.
  • Challenging Content: There is a consensus that the game lacks challenging achievements and collectibles, which were a hallmark of the earlier games.
  • Co-op Functionality: Many users reported issues with co-op play, citing bugs that disrupted the experience and poor camera management when multiple players were involved.
  • Expanded Storytelling: Players expected a more fleshed-out narrative and character development, which they felt was lacking in this installment.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power" retains some charm and visual appeal, it is generally viewed as a step down from its predecessors, primarily due to its short length, unfinished story, and gameplay simplifications.
