A third-person action adventure game with survival elements, set in a lush, green post-apocalyptic world. In Verdant we explore the ruins of a civilization seemingly frozen in time in the 1980s.
The independent German studio Tiny Roar was established in 2015, but remained relatively unknown for the next decade (despite releasing several games, such as XEL in 2022). This began to change when the team - by then consisting of about 25 people - announced the project Verdant described here. It is a third-person perspective (TPP) action-adventure game with survival elements.
We can explore the green world of Verdant on foot or by motorcycle. Along the way, we must manage the character's indicators, maintaining proper nutrition and hydration levels, and occasionally allowing the protagonist to rest.
Additionally, while exploring the land, we gather resources used for crafting and upgrading equipment. The acquired materials can also be used to build camps.
A crucial role is played by the essence of life, which the main character can extract from living creatures thanks to the supernatural abilities. This essence is used both for healing the protagonist and for influencing the world, such as clearing a stream that blocks the path forward.
Although at first glance the world of Verdant may seem friendly, it is not without hostile creatures and other dangers. We are fighting them using an improvised arsenal. Although firearms can be found in the latter, ammunition is a scarce commodity here, so it is worth using it wisely. There is no shortage of stealth options here as well.
While preparing this game, the developers from Tiny Roar decided to minimize the user interface. The state of our character is in can be read from their body language. For example, fatigue is reflected in her movements (and over time also hallucinations), while hunger is manifested by stomach growling.
Verdant takes us to a post-apocalyptic world where technology and culture have remained stuck in the 1980s. It was destroyed as a result of the great war and then taken over by mutated flora and fauna. We explore it in the skin of Sprout, a young adventurer, gradually uncovering his story and influencing his future.
The graphic design of Verdant was done using the cel-shading technique. The game's visuals may evoke associations with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
