Survival horror films from the era of the first PlayStation even decades after their heyday had their fans and imitators. Among the productions referring to these works, and especially to the cult Silent Hill, one can find Welcome to Doll Town. Behind the project is independent studio Bad Wish Games, founded in 2017 and with a portfolio of genre-related Neuromir: First Death.

Gameplay

In Welcome to Doll Town, we view events from a variety of angles, as in classic positions of this type. Exploring the title doll town, we move through its gloomy streets and abandoned buildings, solving puzzles based on interactions with the environment, fighting possessed dolls, and gradually learning more and more about the history of the place. We learn about the latter both through environmental narration and through flashbacks.

  • Combat Mechanics: Some players enjoyed the simple combat mechanics and wrestling finishers, finding them fun and engaging despite their limited use.
  • References and Humor: The game includes various references to other franchises and some humorous elements, which could appeal to players looking for lighthearted moments.

The main cons of the game

  • Bugs and Glitches: Many players reported technical issues, including soft locks, graphical glitches, and awkward camera angles that detracted from the experience.
  • Disjointed Story: The narrative felt rushed and poorly executed, with many players noting that it failed to build suspense or coherence, particularly in the second half.

  • Improved Sound Design: A more robust audio experience, including ambient sounds and music, was suggested to enhance immersion.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Welcome to Doll Town" has a strong foundation with its unique art style and intriguing premise, it suffers from numerous technical issues, a short playtime, and a disjointed narrative that leaves many players feeling disappointed. The game's potential remains evident, but it requires significant refinement and additional content to meet player expectations.
