Shacknews: 5 / 10 by Lucas White

Wild Blue Skies showed a lot of promise, and I was super excited to get my hands on it, especially with all the recent fervor over Star Fox. Rail shooters are a great time, and this particular brand of rail shooter really lends itself well to having fun at different levels of play, across many runs. But after one run, I was ready to be done with this game forever.

Netto’s Game Room: 3 / 5 by Joonatan Syrjätie

Wild Blue Skies delivers a Star Fox experience you have most likely already played. If you haven't, then you get a game that performs and controls well, and is fun. Still, nothing about it is unique compared to its source of inspiration. If you don't own a Nintendo console, you might want to give this one a shot, otherwise it doesn't offer a lot that's new.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Art Direction: The graphics are praised for being vibrant and visually appealing, with a charming cel-shaded style that evokes nostalgia.
  • Sound Design: The voice acting is generally well-received, with characters being portrayed effectively, adding a level of charm to the game.
  • Nostalgic Appeal: For fans of the Star Fox series, particularly those who enjoyed Star Fox 64, the game captures the essence of those classic on-rails shooters.
  • Replayability: The inclusion of collectible items (WILD letters) and high score challenges encourages players to replay levels.

The main cons of the game

  • Derivative Gameplay: Many players feel that the game is too similar to Star Fox 64, lacking originality and creativity in level design and story elements.
  • Control Issues: The controls have been criticized for feeling clunky and unintuitive, particularly with the braking mechanic causing the ship to lose altitude and the separation of charge and normal shots onto different buttons.
  • Difficulty Balance: The game is seen as overly punishing, with enemies dealing significant damage and a lack of health pickups, making it frustrating for players.
  • Lack of Character Development: Characters are perceived as one-dimensional, with minimal interaction and personality, leading to a lack of attachment to the team members.
  • Short Levels: Many levels are described as being too brief, with a lack of depth that leaves players wanting more.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Customizable Controls: Players expressed a desire for the ability to remap controls within the game settings.
  • Difficulty Options: A more balanced difficulty setting or the ability to adjust difficulty levels would be welcomed.
  • Variety in Gameplay Mechanics: Players wished for more advanced maneuvers (like loops and U-turns) to enhance dogfighting and movement.
  • Mission Select: The absence of a mission select feature post-completion was noted as a significant oversight, making it difficult for players to go back and collect missed items or complete challenges.
  • Expanded Story and Character Development: More depth in the narrative and character interactions was desired to create a more engaging experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Wild Blue Skies" has its strengths, many players feel it falls short of its potential and fails to carve out its own identity separate from the game it seeks to emulate.
