World of Goo 2 is the sequel to an acclaimed 2008 puzzle game. It was co-developed by the authors of the original game, 2D Boy, and Tomorrow Corporation.

Mechanics

World of Goo 2 retains the first game's gameplay mechanics. We control the titular blobs of goo, connecting them into various structures, like bridges and towers. The player must design the structures in such a way to allow the goos to reach the level exit.

Our structures are affected by physics. This means the connections between the goos can snap under too much pressure, bringing down the entire structure.

The difficulty increases as we progress further and we unlock new goos with new properties.

  • New Mechanics and Gameplay: The introduction of new goo types and mechanics, such as fluid physics, adds depth and variety to the gameplay, keeping it fresh and engaging.
  • Visuals and Soundtrack: The graphics are considered beautiful with improved visuals over the original. The soundtrack, while mostly remixes of the first game's music, is praised for its quality and charm.
  • Level Design: Many users found the level design creative and challenging, with a good mix of easy and difficult puzzles, especially in the optional challenge levels.
  • Meta Commentary: Some players enjoyed the meta-narrative and self-referential humor, appreciating the game's commentary on sequels and nostalgia.

The main cons of the game

  • Recycled Content: Several reviews highlight that many levels feel recycled from the first game, leading to a sense of repetitiveness and lack of originality.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Some players expressed frustration with the removal of certain features from the original, such as the whistle mechanic, which they found crucial for gameplay. Others noted that the new mechanics sometimes felt half-baked or poorly integrated.
  • Story and Tone: The narrative has been criticized for being less coherent and engaging than the original. Some players found the story sections, particularly in Chapter 4, tedious and lacking in gameplay.
  • High Price Point: The game is considered expensive compared to its predecessor and other platforms, leading some to recommend waiting for sales or purchasing a DRM-free version instead.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Whistle Mechanic: Many players missed the ability to whistle for goo balls, which was a helpful feature in the original game.
  • Free Build Mode: The absence of a free build mode where players could build without constraints was noted as a significant loss.
  • Original Soundtrack: Players were disappointed that the soundtrack largely consists of remixes rather than new original tracks, which they hoped for in a sequel.
  • Improved Control Options: Some users wished for better control features, such as a quick restart option for levels, which would enhance the gameplay experience.
  • Offline Play: There were complaints about the game requiring an internet connection to play, which limited accessibility for some players.
