Wreckreation is an "arcade" open-world racing game focusing on destruction. It was developed by Three Fields Entertainment, a studio best known for Dangerous Driving, whose founders previously co-created the Burnout series. The publisher is THQ Nordic.

Gameplay

The action takes place in MixWorld - an open map of 400 square kilometers, which features a variety of biomes and attractions prepared for exploration and frantic racing. At the same time, the world is susceptible to modification - players can affect the weather or traffic, as well as add their own objects (like ramps or moving obstacles), creating twisted routes, and then share their creations with other users. It also features empty plots that, once discovered, can be developed, such as erecting a police station to see more police cars on the roads.

Saving Content: 3 / 5 by Scott Ellison II

Wreckreation is the realization and culmination of what was being built with Danger Zone and Dangerous Driving, to be a competent and capable arcade racer with boundless creation tools. The opponent AI lacks some consistency, the world could feel more alive, and the menu system could use some work. The overall presentation, vibe, and heart is in the right place to be an open-world racing nirvana. If you never interact with the creation tools, there’s still a lot of game to enjoy. While this isn’t a game that lives up to its potential or pedigree of its inspiration, Wreckreation is the closest we’ll get to a Burnout Paradise 2.

Try Hard Guides: 9 / 10 by Erik Hodges

If you love the freedom and chaos of open-world driving but hate being bogged down by plotlines or filler, Wreckreation is exactly what you’ve been waiting for. The game handles driving pretty well, offers a fair amount of activities that embrace the chaos of virtual driving, and lets you build your own tracks, and somehow manages to do all of it seamlessly, with no menus or load times in between.

Thumb Culture: 4 / 5

Whilst, yes, it does feel like a slightly less-polished version of a Burnout game, there’s no doubt that this is a lot of fun to play. As someone who put countless hours into Criterion’s long-dormant franchise, it’s refreshing to be able to play something familiar, yet with its own unique mechanics. With that being said, I’ll be giving Wreckreation the Thumb Culture Gold Award!
