Following the success of Baldur's Gate 3 and the live-action movie, Dungeons & Dragons will get another big game. Project Baxter is scheduled to be released in 2026 on "all major hardware platforms" and will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.

The title is unlikely to belong to the RPG genre, in any case, not with turn-based combat. The studio responsible for its creation is Starbreeze, creators of PayDay series. The announcement on the developer's official website stressed that the game "will be based on the characteristic features of Starbreeze games, such as cooperative multiplayer mode, lifetime engagement through the game-as-service model, community involvement and a larger-than-life experience." It was also mentioned that it is to be an action adventure game (which does not exclude a significant RPG element).

"It's hard to imagine a better pairing than Dungeons & Dragons and Starbreeze - both are based on cooperative, community-driven "play your way" experiences and endless replayability. Looking at potential brands for our future projects, Dungeons & Dragons has always been at the top of our list, and I am incredibly happy to announce this partnership. I want to thank Wizards of the Coast for being such a great partner. Work on the game is in full swing and we are excited to deliver an amazing Dungeons & Dragons action adventure in 2026," said Tobias Sjögren, CEO of Starbreeze.

For now, this is all we know about Project Baxter. We probably won't hear anything more about the game for a long time, partly because of the distant release, but also because Starbreeze is currently busy with PayDay 3. This is because the title has not performed too well at launch. The game's ratings on Steam are admittedly already much better than just a month ago, thanks in part to another major update, but the road to success on the scale of the second installment is still a long way off.
