The day before yesterday, it was officially confirmed that this year's installment of the Call of Duty series will be CoD: Black Ops 6. At that time, only a few-second teaser with the logo was released, and players were told to wait for more details until June 9, when the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 will take place. However, interesting leaks about this title have now hit the net.

  1. They indicate that the game will also be released on the previous generation of consoles. The information source is highly reliable as it comes from the GameStop retail network. The GameStop is getting ready to start accepting preorders for CoD: Black Ops 6 in versions for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
  2. The lack of ability to order the game for PC and Xbox One needs to be explained here. PC editions of the series haven't been available in boxes for some time, so GameStop wouldn't be able to accept pre-orders for them. In the case of Xbox One, no additional edition is needed, because by buying the one dedicated to XSX/S, we immediately get the version for the older generation.
  3. Of course, it's important to maintain a healthy skepticism towards this information until it is officially confirmed. GameStop has long been an excellent source of such leaks, so we don't really expect this to be a mistake.

These reports coincide with the rumors from February 2023, which suggested that the Call of Duty series wouldn't soon abandon the eighth generation of consoles and at least CoD 2024 would be released on PS4 and Xbox One.

This action is somewhat consistent with the series' tradition of gradually phasing out old consoles. Call of Duty: Black Ops III was released on PS3 and Xbox 360, although in 2015 PlayStation 4 and Xbox One had already been available for two years. The PS3 and X360 release, however, lacked a story campaign, as these devices were not able to "handle" it. It's difficult not to consider that the series has become significantly less ambitious, given that it's almost four years since the release of PS5 and XSX/S, and this year's edition of the cycle will still be able to run on previous generation consoles.
