Modding community of Crusader Kings 3 is growing at an impressive pace. One of the most interesting categories of mods are those that take the action to new settings, so called full conversion mods. A few months ago we wrote about the project called Warcraft: Guardians of Azeroth 2, and today we want to draw your attention to LotR: Realms in Exile, which enables you to play in Tolkien's Middle-earth.

The authors have changed practically all elements of the game. We get a new map, factions, units, characters and graphical and audio elements. The gameplay was also heavily modified to better reflect the changed setting.

  1. LotR: Realms in Exile in the Steam Workshop

The whole thing is brilliantly executed. The mod impresses with the quality of the graphics and the detail of gameplay elements. Even such elements as religions or unique objectives for factions were rendered.

The first version of the project debuted in November 2020, shortly after the release of CK3, and has been developing rapidly since then. A few months ago, version 3.0 was released, which, among other things, expanded the map available in the mod to include the lands of Rhovanion, Rhun and Khand. In turn, the latest edition (3.2) added compatibility with the Tours & Tournaments DLC.

The authors are currently working on version 4.0, which will focus on the orcs and dwarves of the mountainous regions of Middle-earth.

Other notable total conversions for Crusader Kings III

If you feel like taking your CK3 into a new reality, we recommend the following modifications:

  1. A Game of Thrones - A modification set in the Game of Thrones universe.
  2. Apotheosis: The Hellenistic Age - mod moving the action to ancient times. The project recreates the chaotic but fascinating period from the death of Alexander the Great to the formation of the Roman Empire.
  3. Godherja: The Dying World - A mod set in a new dark fantasy world headed for extinction.
  4. The Witcher's Realms - A total conversion set in The Witcher saga.
  5. Warcraft: Guardians of Azeroth 2 - A mod bringing the game to the Warcraft universe.
