Crusader Kings III: Tours and Tournaments is the second major expansion to the grand strategy game Crusader Kings III. It was developed by Paradox Development Studio, also responsible for the original game.

Mechanics

As the title, Tours and Tournaments, indicates, the expansion introduces new events to Crusader Kings III, such as tours across kingdoms and knight tournaments. The players can now explore their kingdom personally, adventuring and competing for valuable rewards.

Of course, just like in every element of the game, there's a second layer to these events. Tours are an excellent excuse to visit unruly vassals and remind them who they're meant to be loyal to (or bring along tax collectors to claim late payments). Tournaments, weddings, hunts and other ceremonial events are also great opportunities to arrange an unfortunate accident and get rid of an inconvienient subordinate.

The main cons of the game

  • Pacing Issues: Frequent loading and result screens disrupt gameplay flow, especially during tournaments, leading to player fatigue.
  • Event Overload: The sheer volume of events can clutter the UI and distract from strategic gameplay, particularly during active wars.
  • Limited Player Agency in Tournaments: Players have minimal control over tournament outcomes, which can feel repetitive and unsatisfying.
  • Arbitrary AI Behavior: AI decisions regarding event invitations and outcomes can feel random and frustrating, undermining the realism of court politics.
  • Lengthy Travel and Event Durations: The new travel mechanics can slow down gameplay, disrupting pacing for players who prefer a more streamlined experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Integration of Features into Base Game: Some users feel that certain features should have been included in the base game or offered as free updates rather than being locked behind a paywall.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Persistent bugs, such as those affecting grand weddings, have been noted, leading to frustration among players.
  • Deeper Mechanics for Tournaments: Many users expressed a desire for more interactive and engaging mechanics within tournaments rather than the current automated system.
  • Balancing of Costs and Rewards: Some players mentioned that the high costs associated with activities like tours and tournaments may deter their use, especially in early-game scenarios.

Summary

  • Overall, while the Tours & Tournaments expansion adds significant depth and flavor to Crusader Kings III, its high price point and some execution flaws have led to mixed reviews among players.
