Steam Now Officially on Tesla; Elon Musk Excited About Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring

Tesla cars have received support for thousands of games from Steam. You can even play with a keyboard and mouse.

Tesla cars have received a Christmas update, which strongly expanded their gaming capabilities.

  1. The most important change, from our point of view, is the addition of support for Steam. This makes it possible to play the thousands of games available on this platform.
  2. Steam is only available in Tesla's Model X and Model S series cars, as only they have components that can handle modern games.
  3. The games can be played with a gamepad, as well as with a mouse and keyboard.
  4. Games can be displayed on both large touch screens installed in these cars.
  5. On Twitter Elon Musk is praising the update, encouraging people to play Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring. The first of these games was used in a video advertising the update.
  6. Steam is just one of many new features added in the update. Also introduced, among other things, is the ability to host video conferences through the Zoom app using the in-car camera, as well as interface improvements.

It is worth mentioning that Steam in Teslas runs on Linux. However, Valve's service uses Proton software, which is a kind of compatibility buffer that enables Windows games to run on Linux-based systems. As a result, it can be expected that, like in the case of Steam Deck, it will be possible to play most of the games available on Tesla.

Tesla's support for Steam has been talked about for a long time. Last year, the company was looking for employees for its Linux-based gaming division, and in February 2022 Elon Musk infiormed that work is underway on a general solution to run Steam games. Previously, individual items were added one at a time to the automaker's offerings, and each had to be separately tailored to Tesla's systems.

The very idea of gaming in cars may seem absurd, but Tesla is investing heavily in autonomous driving features, so providing customers with entertainment while the car is driven by AI makes sense.
