Dwarf Fortress Inspires Game Developers and Sells Well

Dwarf Fortress reigns supreme on Steam, pleasing players and exceeding expectations. The creators of Prison Architect and Terraria admit that without this complex strategy, their titles would never have been made.

After 20 years of hard work, refreshed version of Dwarf Fortress has finally hit Steam. The strategy, considered by many to have a cult following, has already managed to achieve undoubted sales success and brought together a ton of developers celebrating the event. Thanks to this, we learned how much influence the original version of the title had on the entire game industry.

Great activity results and smashing ratingss

The title, which has been awaited for years, has managed to make its way onto Steam's bestseller list (at the moment it is ranked 4th), and at the peak of popularity Dwarf Fortress was played by more than 20 thousand people simultaneously. 40 thousand people, in turn, watched the gameplay broadcasts on Twitch.

Of the more than 6,000 ratings posted on Valve's platform, as much as 97% are positive. This is a huge success for a game that deviates from today's standards, relying on extremely complex gameplay and simple, two-dimensional visuals.

The reception among gamers surprised even the developers

Interestingly, at the request of Kitfox Games, the publisher of the new Dwarf Fortress, even before the game's release, independent analysts prepared a document, in which they estimated the game's potential sales figures. Relying on the number of people who put the title on their wish list and the sales history of the studio's previous games, they assumed that Dwarf Fortress would sell 160,000 copies on Steam within two months of its release. However, this result was beaten in less than 24 hours.

The information was confirmed on Twitter by Tanye X. Short, head of Kitfox Games. The broader community observing the game's development process believed from the beginning that the score would be beaten, but it was to depend primarily on the favorability of Steam's algorithms.
