Fans Believe Larian's Next RPG Could Move Away from Fantasy. They See Hints Pointing to Sci-Fi Everywhere, Even in BG3

More than a year after the release of Baldur's Gate 3, RPG fans are beginning to wonder about Larian Studios' next steps. Many say the studio will try its hand at sci-fi.

It's been over a year since the release of Baldur's Gate 3. Fans of the game cannot complain about boredom, as Larian Studios regularly releases patches that fix bugs, change dialogues, and improve possible endings. If this isn't enough for fans, we can always take a look at the thousands of available mods. However, replaying a beloved game doesn't prevent fantasizing about the future. The gaming community is convinced that the next RPG from Larian will take us into space.

Dungeons and Dragons out, spaceships and aliens in

For some time now, it has been said that Larian Studios is working on two games. Apart from the fact that both of them have to match Baldur's Gate 3, not much else is known. Where there is a lack of information, assumptions are born - fans began to speculate about the future of the studio.

Some even conducted their own micro-investigations. On the r/BaldursGate3 subreddit, user Late_Block2485 posted several statements by Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, which clearly indicate that he has science fiction on his mind.

One user commenting on Nick Dymenson's post also noted that in Baldur's Gate 3, there are potential clues suggesting that Larian intends to embark on a space journey. The user also posted a note from the game in the comment, where one of the characters describes a vision of flying vehicles and mechanical characters.

Space frenzy

The idea of a sci-fi RPG with elements of Baldur's Gate is quite intriguing. User Dancing-Avocado half-jokingly tried to present an example of such a game: "So it all starts on a spaceship. Aliens kidnap you and plant a parasite in your eye. "You manage to escape and the spaceship crashes on a distant planet..." This sounds exactly like an RPG from Larian!

Another Reddit user with the nickname Prestigious-Run-5103 pointed out how exciting it would be to play a title like Baldur's Gate 3, in a three-dimensional space where you "duck around asteroids, shoot through the gap in rings, and hide behind a comet tail..." People in the comments under JesusSamuraiLapdance post that there is not enough good space RPGs out there: "Considering Starfield was wasted potential, and Outer Worlds was too focused on satire to be immersive, Mass Effect is really the only solid example(s) I can think of."

It's unknown whether the potential sci-fi RPG from Larian Studios would build on established franchises like Warhammer 40,000 or Stars, or introduce an entirely new world. After all, it is unknown whether the players' suspicions are accurate at all. One thing is certain, however - if the game is even half as successful as Baldur's Gate 3, we will have another candidate for the GOTY title.
