World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic has been available since Tuesday. Players have thrown themselves onto the highly anticipated expansion to the iconic MMO, although, as it turns out, it hasn't quite lived up to their expectations. It's not so much about the gigantic queues on the servers, but one of the features - the Dungeon Finder.
Nostalgia, but not like this
WoW Classic is the version of the game that was supposed to bring back the mechanics from the MMORPG's early days. Part of those beginnings was the lack of a tool called Random Dungeon Finder, which enables us to quickly find a group to conduct raids.
Instead, the focus was more on establishing contact between players, who had to form groups to defeat monsters in Dungeons. Therefore, in Classic there is an alternative of sorts to the Finder, and that is the Looking for Group (LFG) option.
It has been revamped in WotLK and enables the players to team up by choosing the roles they want to play. LFG also has a special chat room for those looking for a group.
However, LFG doesn't meet players' needs, and not just because it isn't RDF. Already in prepatch we could hear that the community doesn't like the use of LFG chat for spam, or inviting and immediately kicking people out of groups.
"At first I thought the removal of Random Dungeon Finder in WotLK Classic was a good idea.
Now I think that not including RDF is a mistake and will ultimately cause a lot of downtime/wasted time, bringing a lot of [player - ed. note] retention problems," wrote Eric Taylor.
"Yes, yesterday I was kicked from several groups on UK and Nexus because I didn't have Sunwell. I just laugh and move on. These guys who have no life will soon hit 80 lvl and the community in dungeons will normalize," wrote cheezum5000.
"It's really bad at the moment. Better avoid the group finder for the next week or so and enjoy Northrend. Personally, I only do quests and create my own groups for dungeon quests if necessary," wrote MightyTastyBeans.
The future of Dungeon Finder
So the problem is a big one, and Blizzard will probably stand firm on its position. In the studio's April video on both Dragonflight, as well as Wrath of the Lich King it was clearly stated, that Dungeon Finder does not fit into the WoW community.
The goal, as I mentioned, is to rebuild relationships between players who are looking for someone to play together. What's more, WoW Classic is intended for that part of the community that has been with the game the longest and expects a different character from the classic version.
