LoL Is 11 Years Old and the Game Client is Still Not Working Properly

The entry on Reddit reminded League of Legends players that the game's client still doesn't always work properly, despite developers' assurances of corrections.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • A thread on Reddit sparked another discussion about the technical condition of League of Legends' game client;
  • Gamers are surprised that the devs have been unable to develop a working program for 11 years;
  • Developers are still not able to get rid of all the problems despite the changes.

League of Legends was launched over 11 years ago. All these years, like a boomerang, the theme of the problematic game client returned, and which, according to the players, is getting worse every year. This time a simple question from one of Reddit users triggered a discussion, which resulted in diggin up the developers' plans (from nine months ago) to repair the game client or the story of one of the gamers, who wrote a better application by himself.

During their adventure with the MOBA from Riot Games, a significant number of LoL players has encountered problems with the client's operation - the daily routine is the program freezing after the game or bugs in the character selection menu and notifications. User backsideovercrooks quoted the words of the devs, who a few months ago explained why the client has so many problems. It was revealed that all actions performed by gamers, e.g. when selecting characters, generate separate applications in the background, which disappear only after the client is completely closed.

"Champ select introduces many additional plugins and Ember apps. To put it bluntly, almost everything you do in champ select creates new apps. Trading champions generates two of them. So does changing your summoner spell."

As you can probably guess, this leads to long sessions with the game generating huge consumption of hardware resources. The developers found that such a solution enables them, among other things, to immediately disable a selected character (e.g. when it has a bug that breaks the game), but developing a similar system again will require a lot of work.

The story of a player, who in six months created a LoL client from scratch on his own, was also quoted. His application used much fewer resources but was quickly blocked by Riot Games. Interestingly, the gamer later worked for some time for the devs of LoL, but apparently, after a few months he gave it up.

Over the past months, the developers have actually done a lot to improve the client's performance (among other things, the time needed to launch it has been reduced), but not all problems have yet been solved. Currently they are working on the aforementioned character selection menu and app's behavior after the match, two elements that seem to cause most problems (which I can confirm from my own experience). Will LoL's client finally start working normally after this? Let's hope so.
