Squad: Alpha V7 in sight, and it’s big

Details regarding Alpha V7 of Squad – a tactical shooter based on Battlefield 2’s Project Reality – have been deployed. Long story short: vehicles rolled in to the battlefield.

Squad, a tactical shooter that’s been occupying Steam Early Access for more than six months now, is about to get a serious update. Details regarding alpha 0.7 have just been released, and they look more than promising. And even though we still don’t know the exact date of its debut (everything we got is just a ‘coming soon’ banner), what it has to offer will probably drive you nuts.

Calm before the infantry’s storm.

Major changes include:

  • introduction of vehicle warfare, including M1151 HMMVW, BTR-80 APC, M939, or URAL 375D. 11 in total, vehicles will also be divided into 3 classes – fire support, transport, and logistics;
  • implementation of a new, vehicle-oriented map: Yehorovika;
  • better radial menu, allowing the player to place markers on a 2D map by looking at a 3D object;
  • introduction of the logistics system, allowing players to reinforce a position and establish a presence on the battlefield in order to supply player’s team with large drops of ammunition and construction parts;
  • introduction of the claiming system, making the squad leader the only person capable of driving a vehicle;
  • new rifles (PPSH-41 Papasha Submachine gun, SKS rifle and G3 family of rifles, as well as the “vehicle destroyer” – DShK-M) and explosives (RKG-3 Anti-Tank grenade).

The update will also update existing US Army soldier models (a few new textures here and there) and optimize the game engine (it will be using Unreal Engine 4.12 from now on). A full change log can be found here (along with a bunch of in-depth infographics). Stay sharp!
