The Last of Us 2 Could Have Gotten a Battle Royale Mode

Naughty Dog may have been working on a battle royale mode for The Last of Us 2, info found by a data miner suggests.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • The multiplayer mode in The Last of Us 2 could have been a battle royale;
  • This is indicated by the information presented online by a data miner;
  • It's possible that the multiplayer spin-off to TLoU is being developed based on that idea.

The Last of Us 2 is a title that is primarily associated with an extensive single player campaign. This is not a production that would put much emphasis on a multiplayer mode. However, this doesn't mean that the creators didn't work on this kind of module. On the contrary - they confirmed that it was originally supposed to appear in the game. Data miner who runs the Speclizer channel has now dug up fragments of data in the game's files, which shed light on how the multiplayer mode in TLoU2 could have looked like.

The fragments "unearthed" by te miner include a map that was to appear in multiplayer. It presents a vast location composed of several places known from the single player mode. Its sheer size suggests that it could have been created with the battle royale mode in mind. An additional clue to this scenario is the presence in the files of a compass, a player counter and a panel that would allow for quick use of emotes.

It's very likely that Naughty Dog wanted to take advantage of the trends of the time and present players with their own version of the genre popularized by titles such as Fortnite or PUBG. Despite this, the studio ultimately focused on the single player mode. This does not mean, however, that the project was completely abandoned. Two months ago the web went abuzz with the information that the developers were working on a multiplayer spin-off to The Last of Us. It is possible that it is based on the would-be mode from the last installment. However, we will find out the truth only when it is officially presented.
