Battle Royale is a simple game mode of last man standing with a survival twist that adds a random factor to the equation making every match unique. Even though the genre has probably reached its peak some time ago and the trend is now fading, there is no denying that there are still a lot of fans engaged in that kind of fun.

Despite the fact that the convention is quite strict – leaving players to survive by looting whatever they can find and prevail on constantly shrinking arena, there are surprisingly many elements that can alter the dynamics of the gameplay.

One of the most important is obviously a number of participants competing on one server instance. There is a production that can push the boundaries and allow 200 concurrent players to fight for survival. Which one is it and what are the chances that it will actually happen?

Battle Royale game with 200-player lobbies

When we think “battle royale” one of the first games that comes to our minds has to be Fortnite. It is not the first title in this genre, yet without a doubt it is among the most successful and recognizable representatives. It shouldn’t be surprising that this production, developed by Epic Games, is exploring the possibility of expanding their, currently 100-player max, lobbies.

During an interview with Matthew Ball, Tim Sweeny asked about his view on the future of Metaverse and his dream experience, explained why Fortnite allows only for 100-player lobbies. The reason is quite simple – technology. Interestingly, the CEO of Epic Games admitted that Unreal Engine 5, which is at the core of their battle royale, shares a lot in common with the first iteration of this engine from 1997 when it comes to networking model.

Due to that, we could learn that the important element of the next, sixth, implementation of UE will be revolving around improving that part of the engine’s code. The focus of the changes will be on how the Unreal Engine game servers will be able to interact with each other providing a possibility of moving players across them seamlessly.

Obviously, we cannot say for certain that Fortnite will eventually feature 200-player lobbies, yet this cannot be completely put out of the question since we have seen the game’s upgrade from UE4 to UE5. Providing that this title will be around by the time UE6 is up and running, I think it’s safe to expect it to be updated to the latest generation of Epic’s main driver drastically improving its network capabilities.
