The Best Video Game Animals - Cats, Dogs, and Dragons We All Love!

Vibrant companions are an integral part of many video games. We experience the bitterness of betrayal, euphoria, tears of emotion with them. But not all of them are human. Animals also make for valuable companions.

Table of Contents

It's hard to name you, but you're cute anyway

  1. Creature: hard to say
  2. The most famous members of the genus/species: Mr. Chew, Critter, Oom
  3. Games in which they appear: Borderlands 3, Unwritten Talesseries , Torment: Tides of Numenera
  4. Cuddle-worthiness: depends how close you're together

Mr. Chew is a type of summoned, obscure animal. You can unlock summoning it by advancing FL4K's skill tree. It is difficult to compare Mr. Chew to any animal we know. This seemingly unattractive creature turns out not only useful in battle, but also absolutely adorable. Mr. Chew doesn't have to be called Chew, of course, because its name can be changed, but if you play with the default options at least once, this skag will always remain Mr. Chew.

Critter from Unwritten Tales is also not particularly handsome a creature. It moves in a clumsy manner, squawks something in a language known only to itself, and... is disarmingly cute. Although it is not among the most intelligent creatures, it often helps us solve more puzzles and warns us of dangers. And even if it doesn't always show courage, it's impossible to imagine a journey without it after just a few hours spent in the game world.

Just as in Planescap: Torment, there was no shortage of distinctive companions in Numenera. One of them is Oom. I don't feel competent enough to describe what it is in a few sentences. It's a character so enigmatic that it's impossible to even tell if it has eyes at all, or if its entire body is covered in them. He's probably superior to most people in intelligence, but cannot communicate in their language (or does not want to). The Lord of Incarnations experimented on him in a horrible way. Oom is very, very old, distrustful, and so likable that we don't even want to be blaming it for mistakes. And that it doesn't commit too many of these is another matter entirely.

Just Pikachu!

  1. Creature: pokemons
  2. The most famous members of the genus/species: Pikachu, Charizard, Mew and Mewtwo
  3. Games in which they appear: Pokemonseries
  4. Cuddle-worthiness: usually very high

Pokemons hardly need any introduction. These animal-like creatures have already conquered the world 25 years ago! Almost since the beginning, Pikachu has been the icon of the entire franchise. And no wonder – this creature has something of a little bear, cat and a squirrel in it, and at the same time can surprisingly precisely pronounce its name and really effectively electrocute enemies. But even when it gets angry, it's hard to resist the temptation to pull it away and hug.

The creators of Pokemon were not the first and certainly not the last to use collectible, cute, quasi-animals. Back in 1997, the authors of Digimon decided to do something similar. These, although they have amassed quite a fan base and have lived to see manga, anime, and more developed computer games, have never fully emerged from the shadow of their slightly older brother. It's not that these franchises don't make millions anymore. They do; just a little less than Pokemon. The digimon themselves seem a little less cuddle-worthy than their virtual relatives – they have more of a dragon feel to them, and their design is reminiscent of a combination of fur and metal. However, some of them are deceptively reminiscent of Pokémon – especially the small, cute and loyal ones.

Do you still remember tamagotchi? In the late 1990s, the pixel creature was cared for by almost everyone. In fact, the fun wasn't particularly varied, and bootleg copies died after a few days, which caused the pet's death from... drained battery. But the comfort of those few pixels made it really possible to get attached to them. The influence of mechanics designed to evoke emotions in the tamagotchi owners can also be seen in modern games.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I always preferred games where someone accompanied me. Wandering alone just seemed too... lonely. And when the plot is enhanced by more or less fantastic animal characters, I simply cannot deny myself the pleasure of traveling in their company!
