Top 13 Match-3 Games – Like Candy Crush Saga, but Less Sweet

Sometimes, the best solutions are the simplest ones – it's no different with games, and especially with those for mobile devices. If Candy Crush is a bit to sweet, we have prepared a list of 13 match-3 games that are a bit more mature.

Table of Contents

The match-3 genre has a rich history and, contrary to popular belief, it is not a modern invention (Bejeweled is already an adult). Such products have long been coming to both PC and consoles. However, it seems that the real heyday of games in this category came with the mobile devices. The touch screen works perfectly for a game that has you match the threes of shapes or colors.

Undoubtedly, the most popular match-3 game is Candy Crush Saga. This title has already got so many updates that we do not undertake to count all the available levels. However, not everyone's up for the glee offered by Candy Crush, so we have prepared for you a selection of games that are definitely less sweet. Why match-3? Because these games are perfect time killers – they don't require much attention, are simple, and at the same time quite fun. Excellent on the commute to school or work, or while waiting for... well, anything.

ANYTHING WE MISSED?

Know any more games that match the criteria, (not as sweet as Candy Crush Saga) but weren't included here? Share them in the comments below. Someone might be grateful for the advice!

Gems of War

  1. Payment model: free-to-play
  2. Requirements: at least iOS 9.0, or Android 4.1

Can a game about matching stones horizontally and vertically can be diversified? It turns out that it indeed can; even more – it can be furnished with quite a few RPG elements. For Gems of War, the gameplay model used in match-3 games is merely an excuse. An excuse for combat – in the game, we move stones to activate attacks and deal damage to the enemy. Which only further intenfsifies the gameplay formula of match-3.

Gems of War seems simple in principle. We assemble the team and then follow the story that leads from skirmish to skirmish. However, each team member has their own characteristics and abilities, and we can further change their stats with new weapons and items. The game's not short of social features, and offers the option to play with friends, and even PvP. Don't be decieved, though. The entire game still boils down to matching the stones.

  1. Gems of War for iOS is available here, and for Android, here.
