Heart of Darkness is a Paradox Interactive add-on to Victoria II. Expansion in a realistic way reconstructs the race of 19th century powers to gain a dominant position in Africa. For this purpose, numerous changes were introduced to the gameplay mechanisms and colonization and sea battles systems were modified.

In terms of game mechanics, Assault Squad does not stray far from the formula of the base game - the player fights in various places the Second World War left its mark on, taking control over American, Soviet and German, as well as previously unavailable British and Japanese squads.
