The players who control the characters must face waves of robots and destroy the Mann Co. factory in which the machines are created. The developers created 3 completely new maps, on which one can use previously unavailable weapons and abilities. Most features of Mann vs. Machine are available for free, the only exception being the option to play in Mann Up mode on the official Mann Co. server. It requires having a special Tour of Duty Ticket but compensates for that with the possibility to use unique items that can be used in Team Fortress 2.
