Planets other than Earth have it that they are usually barren wastelands devoid of life. Aethus, a survival game from independent, single-player studio Pawsmonaut Games, takes you to one such cosmic desert and lets you make it your new home.

Gameplay

In Aethus, we view events in an isometric view. Initially, we have only basic mining equipment at our disposal, with the help of which we laboriously mine raw materials and gather other resources for the gradual expansion of the outpost. Their sources are both natural (often located below the surface) and artificial, as abandoned facilities left behind by a failed scientific expedition are waiting to be plundered.

  • Quality of Life Improvements: Many thoughtful features have been implemented, such as crafting from all storage, full refunds for dismantled items, and customizable gameplay settings.
  • Innovative Gathering and Building Systems: Players enjoy the unique resource gathering method using the AI drone, Roland, which feels fresh compared to typical mechanics. The building system is intuitive, with a wide array of craftable items and smooth progression.
  • Visual and Audio Quality: The game features a pleasing art style and an excellent soundtrack that complements the atmosphere.
  • Developer Responsiveness: The solo developer is praised for quick bug fixes and active engagement with the community, showcasing a dedication to improving the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Misleading Genre Classification: Some players feel the game is miscategorized as an open-world survival game, as it is more linear and guided than expected.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: The need for backtracking and resource grinding can become tedious, especially in the late game where players feel they are just completing errands to progress the story.
  • Camera and Control Issues: The top-down camera can be cumbersome, and the movement controls may feel unresponsive or slow, leading to frustration during exploration.
  • Limited Automation: While there are some automation features, players express a desire for more systems to reduce the manual grind of resource gathering and crafting.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Map and Fast Travel Options: Players suggest implementing a map and a fast-travel system to ease navigation between locations, especially to reduce the time spent backtracking.
  • Character Recognition: Some users find it difficult to distinguish between characters and locations due to naming conventions and lack of visual identifiers.
  • Auto-Crafting Features: A request for an auto-crafting system for advanced items to streamline the crafting process and reduce the need for repetitive actions.
  • Improved Survival Mechanics: There are calls to enhance or even remove the survival elements, as they feel unnecessary and add to the game's tedium without providing meaningful challenges.

Summary

  • Overall, AETHUS is well-received for its engaging story, innovative mechanics, and the dedication of its solo developer, though it faces criticism for its pacing and some gameplay elements that could benefit from refinement.
