A sandbox game designed for multiplayer gameplay, dedicated to 18th-century seafaring. In Ahoy we find ourselves in the Caribbean, where we build our own legend as corsairs or merchants, and our actions leave their mark on the entire game world.
Although the Capstan Games studio has officially existed since 2021, the idea for its debut project was conceived much earlier. This refers to Ahoy - a sandbox production set in the Caribbean at the end of the 18th century. Initially, the game was developed by one person, but over time, the number of its creators began to expand. The team gained momentum after a great success on Kickstarter, where the developers managed to raise an amount almost ten times greater than what they initially asked from players.
In Ahoy events are viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the game we take on the role of ship captains sailing the 18th-century West India. How exactly our adventure unfolds, as well as the impact we have on the depicted world, largely depends on the game mode we choose, the "career" path we take, and the decisions we make.
The sailing system in Ahoy was designed with a simulation approach. As captains, we issue commands to crew members, taking into account the hierarchy on board. Available commands include raising and lowering the anchor, trimming the sails, spotting threats through a telescope, and operating cannons.
Individual posts (which can range from two to 16 depending on the size of our ship) are filled by both NPCs and other players. The death of the former is permanent, and the loss of a valuable sailor can result in a drastic drop in morale among his surviving colleagues.
And death is not hard to come by here, as naval battles are the highlight of the show. During these battles, we must skillfully maneuver the ship while simultaneously conducting accurate firing. Additionally, there is the possibility of boarding and engaging in close combat with the enemy crew.
As for the ships available in Ahoy, they are designed based on period documentation, and both external decks and their interiors are accessible. Among them, we find smaller vessels for solo sailing or with a small group, as well as much more powerful ships intended for traversing waters with a larger team.
Ahoy offers three main game modes. The most ambitious is the multiplayer Open World, which serves as the long-term vision of the developers. It's an open area where we act as privateers, create our trading empire, or side with one of the colonial powers.
It is important to remember that the decisions we make impact not only our own fate. They leave a mark on the entire game world, which is subject to constant changes, resulting in some cities developing while others decline, and supply and demand affecting the prices of goods. The world map covers a vast area of the entire West India.
Additionally, there is the Sea Trials mode waiting to be explored, which consists of special challenges where we can learn the secrets of sailing or improve our skills. Complementing all of this is the Arena, where we engage in team battles to complete the tasks set before us.
