Car games can be divided into those that more or less strive for realism, and those that ignore the laws of physics, focusing primarily on spectacle. Among the latter is Apex Rush, an arcade "car game" from the independent team Thunderboom Studios.
In Apex Rush we sit behind the steering wheels of diversified cars. Their capabilities and your own abilities are put to the test, as you fight for the best times on different tracks, face drifting challenges (cornering in impressive slides) or perform various stunts in the air.
The tracks wind not only horizontally, but also vertically, and are teeming with jumps. As the driving model implemented here has no simulation bite, the cars can be maneuvered both when all their wheels touch the ground and when the car is in the air. The latter allows us to change direction during "flight" and enables us to perform various stunts.
The title puts at our disposal an array of vehicles, which, although not licensed, largely resemble real models. Among them we will find, among others, the equivalent of the iconic Honda NSX, Ford Mustang, Nissan Silvia S15 or BMW M3 E30. The cars can be tuned by selecting new parts (the range of which we expand as we progress) and painting their bodies as we wish.
Complementing all this is the Track Builder, an editor in which we create our own tracks to share them with the community.
Apex Rush can only be played solo. A substitute for competition with other players is given by fighting for a place in the rankings, in which the times of the runs on each track are recorded.
The graphics of Apex Rush are kept in a colorful low poly style, with both the environment and the vehicle models consisting of a relatively small number of polygons.
