A shooter with roguelike elements set in a demon-infested Paris, developed by the creators of Godfall. In Armatus, we assume the role of a warrior who fights through the city, eliminating enemies with firearms, a scythe, and divine abilities.
Counterplay Games is an American development team that has previously attempted to create a new subgenre (looter slasher) with the game titled Godfall. Armatus described here is their next project. This time we are dealing with a shooter featuring roguelite elements and set in post-apocalyptic Paris.
In Armatus the action is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP).
During the game we explore the so-called Scoured Path and face demons lurking around. Engaging in dynamic fights is the main attraction here. We eliminate monsters using firearms (such as shotguns or submachine guns), keeping adversaries at a distance, or using a scythe if we prefer melee combat (or are forced into it).
As we progress, we develop our character by unlocking celestial abilities and passive upgrades, and by gathering increasingly better equipment. It's up to us whether we specialize in area attacks, make use of supernatural skills, or focus on firearms. Individual abilities can be upgraded, modified, and mixed to create deadly combinations.
The situation is complicated by the fact that after death, we start the entire journey almost from scratch. Almost, because the currency we've collected and selected upgrades remain with us across subsequent attempts.
The gameplay is further enriched by the fact that the locations we visit are procedurally generated. This ensures that each journey looks slightly different from the previous ones.
The titular Armatus is an ancient order whose last members (considering themselves the only living mortals) have taken refuge from demons in the cathedral in Trois. During the game, we take on the role of an immortal warrior summoned by them, bound to holy armor. Our task is to find the Shadowed Gate leading to heaven, although we don't really know if the members of the order are worthy of salvation.
