Assassin's Creed: Shadows is the thirteenth main installment of the best-selling series published by Ubisoft, initiated in 2007. The game was developed by Ubisoft Quebec studio (known primarily for Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Assassin's Creed Odyssey) in cooperation with fifteen other teams working under the wings of the French publisher.

Plot - Assassin's Creed in Japan

Just like in previous installments, the key plot of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is the centuries-old conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the Order of the Templars. The game takes us on a journey to feudal Japan.

Sengoku historical period

The game is set in 1579, during the late Sengoku period, also known as the Azuchi-Momoyama period. This is a time not only of great social reforms, the emergence of religious movements and artistic renaissance, but also of a great process of unifying the country.

Assassin's Creed: Shadows Review: Great combat and stealth, where plot plays it too safe

Assassin's Creed: Shadows is a game full of contrasts. On one hand, it offers solid stealth mechanics and a great combat system, but on the other, it features a lackluster storyline and generic exploration. If you're a fan of the series, you'll likely find something to enjoy here, but if you weren't convinced from the start, the combat and stealth may not be enough to win you over.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals: The game features stunning graphics and beautifully rendered environments, particularly capturing the essence of feudal Japan with dynamic weather and seasonal changes.
  • Combat System: The combat mechanics are seen as an improvement over previous titles, with a focus on both stealth and action. The gameplay allows for engaging combat experiences, especially with the character Naoe.
  • Stealth Mechanics: Players appreciate the stealth gameplay, particularly with Naoe, which is described as fluid and rewarding.
  • World-Building: The game creates an immersive world that, despite its flaws, offers an experience that fans of the series may enjoy, especially in terms of exploration and atmosphere.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many users criticize the game for its repetitive missions and activities, leading to a lack of engagement over time. Players often feel they are doing the same tasks repeatedly without significant variation.
  • Weak Storyline: The narrative is described as generic and lacking depth, especially compared to earlier entries in the franchise. The dual protagonist system (Naoe and Yasuke) is seen as underdeveloped, with players feeling disconnected from the characters.
  • Performance Issues: Several reviews mention performance problems, including frame rate drops and bugs that can disrupt gameplay, even on high-end hardware.
  • Microtransactions: Players express frustration over the presence of microtransactions in a full-priced single-player game, feeling that it detracts from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Storytelling: Users feel that the game lacks meaningful character development and an engaging plot, something that earlier Assassin's Creed games excelled at.
  • Variety in Side Activities: There is a call for more diverse side quests and activities that go beyond the repetitive tasks currently present in the game.
  • Improved Loot and Progression Systems: Many players desire a more rewarding loot system that encourages exploration and experimentation rather than relying on grinding for materials and upgrades.
  • Offline Play: Users are frustrated with the requirement to be online to play a single-player game, which is seen as an unnecessary barrier.

Summary

  • In summary, Assassin's Creed Shadows offers a visually appealing world and improved combat mechanics but suffers from repetitive gameplay, a lackluster storyline, and performance issues, leading to mixed reviews from players.
