Assassin's Creed: Shadows is the thirteenth main installment of the best-selling series published by Ubisoft, initiated in 2007. The game was developed by Ubisoft Quebec studio (known primarily for Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Assassin's Creed Odyssey) in cooperation with fifteen other teams working under the wings of the French publisher.

Plot - Assassin's Creed in Japan

Just like in previous installments, the key plot of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is the centuries-old conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the Order of the Templars. The game takes us on a journey to feudal Japan.

Sengoku historical period

The game is set in 1579, during the late Sengoku period, also known as the Azuchi-Momoyama period. This is a time not only of great social reforms, the emergence of religious movements and artistic renaissance, but also of a great process of unifying the country.

Assassin's Creed: Shadows Review: Great combat and stealth, where plot plays it too safe

Assassin's Creed: Shadows is a game full of contrasts. On one hand, it offers solid stealth mechanics and a great combat system, but on the other, it features a lackluster storyline and generic exploration. If you're a fan of the series, you'll likely find something to enjoy here, but if you weren't convinced from the start, the combat and stealth may not be enough to win you over.

Worth Playing: 9 / 10 by Tony "OUberLord" Mitera

I didn't have high expectations of Assassins Creed: Shadows, as I've really struggled to become engaged with the most recent entries in the series. The setup in Shadows takes a little while, but the resulting payoff is worth it. The gameplay is engaging, but the plot and characters really drive things forward. It must be challenging to develop a game within such a long-running series and have it still feel like something fresh and new, and Shadows is the closest that a game has come to that in quite some time.

Use a Potion: 9 / 10

Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes the best elements of the series – stealth, open-world exploration, and visceral combat – and refines them to make for an absolutely sublime experience. The world is breathtaking, the gameplay is immensely satisfying, and the ability to swap between two completely different playstyles makes for endless possibilities when tackling each dangerous situation that you find yourself in across the game. It’s utterly captivating, and whilst it may have taken a little longer to launch than expected, Ubisoft have delivered one of the best games in the series with Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

WellPlayed: 8.5 / 10 by Kieron Verbrugge

Ubisoft's big, bold swing with Assassin's Creed Shadows mostly connects, proving that it was right to hold off on the Hail Mary Feudal Japan setting until it had honed the series' RPG trappings. Shadows' attempts at new ideas don't all land the same, but it excels in the areas that matter most in these games with a gorgeous, rich and well-researched world to explore, compelling stealth gameplay and a story full of intrigue and fresh takes on historical figures.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals: The game is praised for its stunning graphics and beautiful open-world design, particularly the representation of feudal Japan and the seasonal changes.
  • Stealth Mechanics: Players appreciate the improved stealth gameplay, particularly when using Naoe, which is considered one of the best in the series.
  • Combat System: The combat has been described as more tactical and engaging compared to previous entries, with a focus on strategy rather than hack-and-slash mechanics.
  • Character Variety: The dual-protagonist system (Naoe and Yasuke) offers different gameplay styles, with Naoe being favored for stealth and Yasuke for brute strength.
  • World Exploration: While criticized in some aspects, many players still find joy in exploring the game world and engaging in side activities.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many reviews highlight the repetitive nature of missions and side quests, leading to a feeling of monotony over time.
  • Weak Story and Characters: The narrative is often described as confusing, disjointed, and lacking depth. Characters feel underdeveloped, with little emotional engagement.
  • Technical Issues: Players report performance problems, including frame rate drops and bugs that disrupt gameplay, particularly with the combat and parkour mechanics.
  • AI and Enemy Design: The enemy AI is often criticized for being predictable and unchallenging, reducing the excitement of combat encounters.
  • Character Switching: The requirement to switch between protagonists during missions is seen as cumbersome, often requiring load screens and disrupting gameplay flow.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Storytelling: Players express a desire for a more coherent and engaging main plot, as well as a return to the overarching Assassin vs. Templar conflict that characterized earlier games in the series.
  • Variety in Side Activities: Many users feel that the side quests and activities lack creativity and depth, often becoming tedious and uninteresting.
  • Improved Parkour Mechanics: Some players miss the fluidity and excitement of parkour from earlier titles, noting that the current system feels clunky and restrictive.
  • Meaningful Character Development: There is a call for deeper character arcs and relationships, particularly in the context of the dual protagonists, to enhance player investment in the story.
  • Integration of Modern-Day Elements: Players miss the modern-day narrative and connection to the Isu mythology, which they believe should be a central aspect of the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Summary

  • In summary, while "Assassin's Creed Shadows" offers a visually stunning experience with enjoyable stealth mechanics, it struggles with repetitive gameplay, a weak narrative, and technical issues. Players express a longing for the depth and engagement of earlier entries in the franchise.
