Battleborn for PC, PS4 and XONE is an innovative FPS that employs numerous MOBA features. It is another work of the Gearbox Software team, an experienced developer of first person shooters (known from series like Brothers in Arms and Borderlands).
The game presents a vision of the universe where a dark force, known as Varelsi, led to the obliteration of all but one star. Fleets belonging to five homeless factions – pulled out strait from fairy tales – meet in the last surviving solar system called Souls, which leads to a war for resources and space in different environments of the said system’s planets.
At the time of release there were 20 highly varied characters available. We have Oscar Mike, a typical Call of Duty-like soldier, as well as quasi-samurai Ruth, armed with two swords, and Thorn, an agile female elf archer. Gallery of characters has since been greatly expanded through DLCs.
Battleborn for PC, PS4 and XONE offers two basic forms of gameplay: a cooperative campaign, with a story mode for up to five players, and competitive multiplayer. The latter uses various game modes, one of them being Incursion, in which 5-man teams are supported by dozens of droids (minions), trying to breach through enemy’s fortifications and devastate the bases hidden behind them.
Characters develop during meetings, aiming to achieve a maximal level of experience. At each level-up we select one of two skills, which more often than not differ greatly; on the 7th level, we receive an ultimate skill (ult). Experience is reset after the end of the match. Aside from that, there is a general account progression, showing in the characters we unlocked with our successes in duels and campaigns, as well as gathering virtual money used to buy goodies like skins or alternative skills for heroes.
One of the distinctive features of Battleborn are eye-catching visuals which employs a comic book-like style (thanks to the cel shading technique). Scott Kestler, who previously worked on the Borderlands series, is responsible for the game’s artistic direction.
