Blade Chimera is an action platformer metroidvania. It was co-created by WSS playground and Team Ladybug, known for such games as Touhou Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth.

Plot

Blade Chimerais set in a grim future, humanity on the brink of extinction due to horrifying monsters. After thirty years of war, the survivors united under the banner of the Missa Association, a religious group whose leader knows how to defeat the demons opposing them.

The protagonist is Shin, an amnesiac warrior and one of the Association's best fighters. He wields the Lumina sword, actually a demon named Lux. The unusual couple traverses the world together, facing all sorts of dangers. On their journey, Shin gradually remembers his past and his forgotten skills.

Lords Of Gaming : 8.5 / 10 by Randy Rhodes

In the end, BLADECHIMERA stands as a testament to Team Ladybug’s evolution—a departure from their traditional Metroidvania roots that is satisfyingly unique. Sure, the early ease and lighter platforming might not fully satisfy hardcore genre purists, but it builds into an excellent experience with razor-sharp combat, pixel-perfect visuals, and a narrative that sneaks up on you with surprising depth. The neon-lit streets of its cyberpunk Osaka, drenched in Japanese occult lore, brings the experience to life, accompanied by an energetic soundtrack that encapsulates it further. Lux and Shin’s bond delightfully brings together your playthrough with rewarding gameplay and narrative beats. It’s a game that is great for a quick playthrough but further rewards you if you choose to dive deeper into its side content, leaving a lasting impression either way. For fans of the studio or anyone seeking a finely crafted action platformer, BLADECHIMERA wholeheartedly proves to be a worthy investment.

Shacknews: 9 / 10 by Lucas White

Blade Chimera is short, sweet, and simple. It’s also visually enthralling and just… really dang cool. It’s the perfect kind of game to run into in January 2025, especially after so much of my time up until now has been eaten by multiple dozen-hour RPGs.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Art Style: The pixel art and animations are stunning, with detailed environments and character designs that create an immersive aesthetic.
  • Fluid Combat Mechanics: The game features responsive and satisfying combat, allowing players to mix melee and ranged attacks with unique abilities from the demon sword, Lux.
  • Fast Travel System: The ability to teleport to any previously explored area greatly enhances exploration and reduces tedious backtracking.
  • Varied Boss Designs: Boss fights are visually impressive and engaging, adding excitement to the gameplay.
  • Engaging Gameplay: The combination of action, exploration, and combat mechanics creates a fun and entertaining experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Linear Level Design: The game is criticized for its linearity, lacking the intricate, maze-like maps typical of classic metroidvanias, which reduces the feeling of exploration.
  • Difficulty Balance: Many players found the game to be on the easier side, with most enemies and bosses posing little challenge until the final encounters.
  • Underwhelming Narrative: While the story has potential, it is often seen as predictable and not fully developed, with some characters feeling forgettable.
  • Repetitive Side Quests: Many side quests involve mundane tasks like defeating a certain number of enemies, which can feel like busywork rather than meaningful content.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Complex Exploration Mechanics: Players expressed a desire for more traditional metroidvania mechanics, such as finding abilities or upgrades throughout the game rather than unlocking them through a skill tree.
  • Increased Challenge: A request for a more balanced difficulty curve, possibly with a New Game+ mode or a higher difficulty setting, to provide a greater challenge for experienced players.
  • Expanded Story Depth: Users wanted a more intricate and engaging narrative, with deeper character development and potentially multiple endings to enhance replayability.
  • Improved Side Quest Variety: Suggestions for more interesting and varied side quests that go beyond simple enemy kill counts or fetch quests.

Summary

  • Overall, BLADECHIMERA is seen as a visually impressive and enjoyable metroidvania with engaging combat, but it suffers from linearity, a lack of challenge, and a somewhat predictable story.
