Pixel Byte: 8 / 10 by Taylor Rioux

By taking a bountiful genre into new and interesting directions, Blood Dungeon is able to rise above the chaff. It eschews mindless stat boosts in favor of a more measured approach to the chaos inherent to the format and, in doing so, creates a distinctive experience that rewards quick thinking just as much as smart build choices. The balance between the low-level power of the player and the necessity of navigation elicits a tension and excitement so rarely seen in bullet-heaven titles.

Completexbox: 90 / 100

As with these Survivors-likes, there is the typical meta-progression chasing so you slowly feel more powerful and able to take on the harder dungeons. In the hub area you trade off bones for permanent ability increases like more health, damage and so on, and the Bunker holds the unlockable cast of characters. Despite the low detail, Newgrounds-esque, somewhat globular art style, the characters are all distinctive. The default Gunman wears a permanently worried look. The Barbarian is determined, and naked. The Baby has a massive face, crawls on all fours, and goos during action. Bit weird that one.Blood Dungeon is absurd both in it’s presentation, and in its addictiveness. Although it might not be everyone’s style, I could say the same for Vampire Survivors. I didn’t ‘get’ it until I played it for five minutes and then another 30 hours after that. It’s fast, has a dangerously addictive gameplay loop, and is bloody fun.

We’ve had experience with the genre before, but it hasn’t captured our attention — until Blood Dungeon, that is.

The main cons of the game

  • Balancing Issues: A significant number of reviews mention that the game suffers from balance problems, particularly in the late game where enemies become overly difficult to defeat without specific builds or items.
  • Limited Build Variety: Many players express frustration with the lack of viable build options, often feeling forced to rely on a small number of powerful weapons or upgrades to succeed.
  • Difficulty Spikes: The game reportedly has sharp difficulty spikes, especially around certain boss encounters, which can lead to frustration and a sense of unfairness in gameplay.
  • Visual Clarity: Some players find the visual effects overwhelming, making it difficult to track their character or understand the chaotic on-screen action.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Endless Mode: Many players suggest the addition of an endless mode to allow for continued play after defeating the last boss, which would provide more opportunities for leveling and experimentation.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions include the ability to banish or lock certain items from the upgrade pool during runs to reduce clutter and increase meaningful choices.
  • Improved Progression Systems: Some players propose a more gradual progression system that doesn’t stall after reaching certain levels, allowing for a more rewarding experience as players unlock new abilities and items.
  • Better Visual Readability: There are calls for improvements in visual clarity, particularly regarding enemy visibility and the overall chaos during intense moments.

Summary

  • In summary, while Blood Dungeon has a lot of engaging elements, including its unique gameplay and artistic style, it faces challenges with balance, variety, and clarity that could improve the overall player experience.
