Koji Igarashi is renowned for developing the Castlevania series in the years 2001-2010 (however, he started his work on the series much earlier), who left Konami in 2014 to start creating games on his own. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the first independent game coming from this developer taking heavy inspiration from his critically acclaimed Castlevania series. The game is an action-adventure 2.5D platform game (also known as Metroidvania or Igavania games) set in the gothic horror setting. The studio behind the development of the game is Inti Creates, which is known for many games from the Mega Man series.

Story

The players assume the role of Miriam, a young orphan bearing a curse, which causes her skin to be partially transformed into crystal. After a 10-year long slumber, the girl wakes up in a castle roaming with demonic forces and heads out to meet the builder of the place, who was formerly her friend. Earlier, he succumbed to the same curse as she did, which resulted in him turning into the lord of darkness.

  • Content and Replayability: The game includes multiple modes (like Boss Rush and Randomizer), different playable characters, and a wealth of items and weapons to discover, enhancing replayability.
  • Challenging but Fair Combat: Players generally find the combat satisfying, with a good balance of difficulty that requires learning enemy patterns, especially during boss fights.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Polish and Clarity: Many reviews mention issues with the game's polish, including unclear item descriptions, vague progression hints, and bugs that disrupt gameplay.
  • Grindiness: Some players feel that the game requires excessive grinding for resources and abilities, particularly for those seeking to complete the game fully.
  • Stiff Controls: Several users report that the movement feels clunky and unresponsive at times, particularly with dodging mechanics that can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences.
  • Inconsistent Boss Design: While some bosses are engaging, others are criticized for being unmemorable or lacking challenge, leading to a disparity in the overall experience.

  • Improved Combat Mechanics: Suggestions include adding more fluidity to combat, such as the ability to aim weapons in multiple directions or a more responsive dodge mechanism.
  • More Engaging Side Quests: Users wish for more meaningful side quests that contribute to character development and world-building, rather than simple fetch quests.
  • Better Integration of DLC: Some players are frustrated that certain achievements and content are locked behind paid DLC, which they feel should have been included in the base game.

Summary

  • Overall, *Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night* is largely praised for its homage to the *Castlevania* series and its engaging gameplay, but it also faces criticism for its lack of polish, grindiness, and some design choices that detract from the overall experience.
