In fantastic worlds, daredevils who confront witches and adepts of black magic could enjoy a certain respectability. Such an assumption was made by the independent studio Poor Locke, which is behind an action adventure game with RPG elements titled Crimson Capes.
In Crimson Capes we watch the action from the side. During the gameplay, we take on the role of the titular Crimson Capes, or professional witch hunters. The production puts at our disposal both their leader, Milon the Tempest, and other characters. The protagonists have been diversified in terms of fighting style and combat skills.
The game is divided into missions, during which we go to different locations (ruins, magical towers, mystical forests, dark caves) and fight our way through minor enemies, and at the end of each stage we face a powerful boss. In between expeditions, we end up at the Providence temple, which has been turned into a fortress and serves as a base camp. Here we can rest and prepare for the next assignments, selecting and upgrading equipment.
Clashes in Crimson Capes are dynamic, and have been implemented based, among other things, on the authentic rules of swordsmanship written in medieval treatises and manuals. The combat system includes, among other things, dodges, thrusts, cuts and pirouettes, which must be skillfully juggled. On the battlefield, we must observe the opponent's movements and adapt to them, instead of attacking blindly.
In addition to white weapons, on the battlefield we make use of magical items called fetishes. They provide various additional effects that increase our combat potential. At the same time, they only serve a supportive function, making it impossible to rely on them completely.
As we progress, we become stronger with equipment (weapons and armor), unlockable abilities, and magical power, which we extract from the blood of defeated wizards and imbue our cape with.
Crimson Capes can be played as a single player or in multiplayer mode over the Internet. The production allows both co-op with other players and duels with them.
In Crimson Capes we find ourselves in the fantastic kingdom of Amvros. During the course of the game we become the so-called Left Hand of the King, as we are tasked with tasks that other knights and envoys do not undertake. Hunting down witches and warlocks, we gradually discover the true meaning of power, and learn that sinister powers have reached out their claws for the kingdom we protect.
The graphic design of the Crimson Capes game combines a two-dimensional pixel art style with tri-dimensional character animations. The latter were realized using the rotoscopic technique, known for example from the first installments of the Mortal Kombat series or Prince of Persia from 1989.
