In June 2025, the Steel Balalaika studio along with the Slitherine publisher delivered a real-time strategy (RTS) titled Broken Arrow, depicting a fictional contemporary conflict between the United States and Russia. Six months later, the companies released the first expansion for this work, titled Broken Arrow: Baltic Battalion.

New features in the expansion

The most significant new feature introduced in Broken Arrow: Baltic Battalion is the titular Baltic Battalion. This is a new military specialization available for the American faction, representing the combined forces of the Baltic countries - Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Each of these countries contributes something unique to our efforts on the front: Latvia offers adaptability, Lithuania provides firepower, and Estonia brings technology.

  • Visuals and Models: The new units are praised for their detailed models and immersive voice lines, contributing positively to the game's aesthetics.
  • New Gameplay Options: Some players enjoyed the addition of new units and the potential for fresh strategies, particularly with the introduction of Baltic units that offer a different playstyle.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Original Content: A significant portion of the new units were already present in the campaign, leading players to feel that the DLC was a rehash of existing assets rather than a true expansion.
  • Slow Development Pace: Many users expressed frustration over the lengthy wait for the DLC, with some feeling that the developers missed deadlines and failed to communicate effectively.
  • Balance Issues: The Baltic Battalion is perceived as underpowered compared to existing factions, especially against Russian forces. This has led to concerns about gameplay balance and the viability of the new units in competitive play.
  • Limited New Features: Critics pointed out that the DLC did not introduce substantial new gameplay mechanics or modes, making it feel more like an update than a full-fledged expansion.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • New Factions: Many players expressed a desire for new factions or a more diverse range of units, rather than just additional specializations for the existing U.S. faction.
  • Improved Communication and Updates: Users highlighted the need for better transparency from the developers regarding future content and updates, as well as more frequent patches to address existing bugs and balance issues.
  • Unique Unit Characteristics: Players were disappointed that many units lack distinct identities or specialized roles, with calls for more unique units that offer varied gameplay options rather than just reskinned versions of existing ones.
  • Server and Technical Improvements: Several reviews noted ongoing technical issues, including lag and performance problems, which detract from the overall gameplay experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while the *Broken Arrow: Baltic Battalion* DLC has its merits, particularly as a free addition, the community's feedback indicates a strong desire for more substantial content, better communication from the developers, and improvements to game balance and performance.
